The pentathletes are about to mount horses they know nothing about, with just 20 minutes to warm up, before tackling double and treble jumps and 10 other obstacles in the showjumping event. It’s the least predictable and most challenging of the pentathlon sports. The highly tuned athletes not only rely on their own skills and fitness – they are also at the mercy of an unknown element: a horse. The temperament and ability of the horse is an extremely important factor in the competition. The person given the task of selecting horses for the event therefore plays a crucial role. For the Sydney 2000 Olympics, that job is in the hands of Shannon O’Meara, who arrived at Charles Sturt University’s (CSU’s) Wagga Wagga Campus in March as Head Trainer. As the official supplier of equine services to the Sydney 2000 Olympics, CSU will accommodate and manage 20 horses to be trained for the Olympic competition at its Equine Centre.

No sports axed for Beijing
By Stephen Wilson in Switzerland
May 17, 2004 BASEBALL, softball and modern pentathlon were assured today they will remain on the Olympic program at least through the 2008 Beijing Games.
The International Olympic Committee said that, barring serious ethical violations or failure to uphold anti-doping rules, no sports will be dropped before the games of 2012. The decision, announced by IOC president Jacques Rogge at the opening of a three-day executive board meeting, gives endangered sports more breathing space as they try to preserve their Olympic status. Mr Rogge said the IOC will review all the sports after this summer's Athens Olympics and decide on the program for 2012 at its session in Singapore in July 2005. Meantime, the current list of 28 Olympic sports will stay unchanged for Beijing, he said. Baseball, softball and modern pentathlon had been recommended for exclusion by an IOC panel in 2002. At a meeting in Mexico City, the IOC decided to put off a decision until after Athens, but Mr Rogge said at the time the three sports could still be dropped for Beijing.

Modern Pentathlon, Baseball Look Set to Stay

Jacques Rogge, orthopedic surgeon-turned-IOC president, is set to learn that taking a knife to the Olympic Games and cutting sports from the program can be just as challenging an operation as fixing bones. An International Olympic Committee (IOC) session opening on Wednesday will vote whether to take modern pentathlon, softball and baseball out of the 2008 Beijing Games, the first time the IOC has proposed such a radical change since 1936. Since taking over as president last year, former Olympic yachtsman Rogge has pledged to scale down the Summer Games after decades of expansionism under his predecessor Juan Antonio Samaranch because he feels the event is becoming too big and expensive to manage.

Modern Pentathlon
The modern pentathlon was introduced at the 1912 Olympics as a test of military skillsor, at least, the skills that were traditionally taught at military academies of the time. It was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the chief founder of the modern Olympic Games. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. Only Army officers were allowed to participate in 1912, when the United States was represented by a 26-year-old second lieutenant, George S. Patton, a skilled rider and fencer. Patton did very well in four of the events and might well have won the gold medal except for his poor marksmanship. He finished 21st in the pistol shooting event, which dropped him to fifth overall. Scoring was originally based on a competitor's placing in the various events, with the lowest score winning. It's now based on a scoring table similar to the one used in track and field for the decathlon. Standards are set for each event and a competitor receives 1,000 points for equalling the standard. Points are added if the standard is exceeded and subtracted if the performance falls below the standard. The events have changed somewhat since 1912. The equestrian event, originally a 5,000-meter cross-country ride against time, is now a 400-meter stadium jumping course. The swimming event has been cut from 300 meters to 200 meters, the cross-country running event from 4,000 meters to 3,000 meters. The shooting event, originally a 22-caliber pistol shot from 25 meters at a turning target, has become a 10-meter air pistol shot at a stationary target.
