It was introduced to the ancient Olympics in the eighth century BC after the Spartans complained that too many Olympic events favoured civilians and did nothing to reward the skills of the warrior. In those days the sport was an elimination event featuring five disciplines: discus, spear throwing, long jump, running and wrestling. The idea was that weaker competitors were progressively eliminated until just two remained to wrestle for the title. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympics, obviously liked the idea and was keen to incorporate a similar event in the Games.

Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History MODERN PENTATHLON The modern pentathlon was introduced at the 1912 Olympics as a test of military skillsor, at least, the skills that were traditionally taught at military academies of the time. It was designed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the chief founder of the modern Olympic Games. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. Only Army officers were allowed to participate in 1912, when the United States was represented by a 26-year-old second lieutenant, George S. Patton, a skilled rider and fencer. Patton did very well in four of the events and might well have won the gold medal except for his poor marksmanship. He finished 21st in the pistol shooting event, which dropped him to fifth overall. Scoring was originally based on a competitor's placing in the various events, with the lowest score winning. It's now based on a scoring table similar to the one used in track and field for the decathlon. Standards are set for each event and a competitor receives 1,000 points for equaling the standard. Points are added if the standard is exceeded and subtracted if the performance falls below the standard.

International Olympic Committee Planning to Drop Modern Pentathlon from the Olympic Games
A Special Edition of the Sport Journal
In light of the International Olympic Committee's recent discussion to drop the Modern Pentathlon from the Olympic Games, the President of the United States Sports Academy, Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich and editors of the Sport Journal feel it timely and important to publish this Special Edition to bring attention to this grave matter. We add our support to retain the Modern Pentathlon as a vital and historic event in the Olympic Games. We are reprinting opinions of several International Olympic Committee members. The first is an abridged letter from Klaus Schormann, President of the Union Internationale De Penthathlon Moderne. President Schormann's letter is addressed to the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge. Monaco, 5 November 2002 According to our discussion during our last meeting in Lausanne, the UIPM is sending a summary of its arguments and response to the Programme Commission report which it feels appropriate to be considered for the Sport of Modern Pentathlon to remain in the Olympic Programme. These arguments which cover a larger spectrum than those developed by the Programme Commission should be given to the IOC executive Board prior to their last meeting in November, and to the IOC Members in case the matter would be voted during the session in Mexico.

History Disciplines Athletes Calendar ... Glossary
The roots of Modern Pentathlon can be traced to the ancient Pentathlon, which included the following five disciplines: discus throw, javelin, long jump, the stadium-length race, and wrestling. The ancient Pentathlon was incorporated into the ancient Olympic Games in 708 B.C., where Lambis Lakedaimonios was crowned the first Olympic victor. Pierre de Coubertin wished to include a combined sport into the programme of the modern Olympic Games, which would highlight the prototype of the multi-faceted “super athlete”, someone who combines strength, technique and a strong personality. Inspired by the ancient Pentathlon, he created the Modern pentathlon, a sport that combines technical disciplines such as Shooting, Fencing and Riding, together with strength and endurance disciplines like Swimming and Cross-country running.

AP SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) It took a while for the feeling to set in for Philadelphia native Emily deRiel after she captured the silver medal on Sunday in the first Olympic women's modern pentathlon. Britain's Stephanie Cook won the gold, after she passed deRiel on the fiinal lap of the 3-kilometer run. Britain's Kate Allenby won bronze. "I can't believe it still," deRiel said. "I feel like maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and it'll be the real thing. "I don't know how it happened. I really don't." DeRiel's medal was the first for an American since 1960, when Robert Beck won the bronze. The last American to win a silver was George Moore in 1948.

OLYMPIC MODERN PENTATHLON They call it the 'Modern Pentathlon' to distinguish it from the one which, for some 900 years, was a feature of the ancient Olympic Games and consisted of four athletic events and wrestling. The word 'pentathlon' comes from Greek, 'penta' meaning five and 'athlon' equals contest. This is a most demanding sport. An athlete has to be good to very good at target shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running in order to succeed. Today's modern pentathlon entered the Olympic program in 1912, largely as the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin, who saw this sport as the supreme test of versatility and felt it was an ideal sport for army officers. The concept behind the competition is that a military courier sets out on horseback to carry a message. Along the way, he has to fight a duel with epees, use his pistol, swim across a river, and then run through the woods to reach his goal. And so it was: the sport gained quick acceptance especially in Sweden and Finland and for the first 30 years or so, only military personnel took part.
