Links International Olympic Committee Planning to Drop Modern Pentathlon from the Olympic Games A Special Edition of the Sport Journal In light of the International Olympic Committee's recent discussion to drop the Modern Pentathlon from the Olympic Games, the President of the United States Sports Academy, Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich and editors of the Sport Journal feel it timely and important to publish this Special Edition to bring attention to this grave matter. We add our support to retain the Modern Pentathlon as a vital and historic event in the Olympic Games. We are reprinting opinions of several International Olympic Committee members. The first is an abridged letter from Klaus Schormann, President of the Union Internationale De Penthathlon Moderne. President Schormann's letter is addressed to the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge. Monaco, 5 November 2002 According to our discussion during our last meeting in Lausanne, the UIPM is sending a summary of its arguments and response to the Programme Commission report which it feels appropriate to be considered for the Sport of Modern Pentathlon to remain in the Olympic Programme. These arguments which cover a larger spectrum than those developed by the Programme Commission should be given to the IOC executive Board prior to their last meeting in November, and to the IOC Members in case the matter would be voted during the session in Mexico. Potted History Some early history about women and the Olympics Married women were barred from the Ancient Olympic Games, but prostitutes or virgins were allowed to spectate. Kallipateria was the first female Olympic boxing coach in 440 BC. The first female Olympic champion was a Spartan princess called Kynisca, in 392 BC. She was also the first woman to become a champion horse trainer when her horses and chariot competed and won in the Ancient Olympic Games. Women had their own athletic games of Hera from about 1000 BC. Women were originally the prizes in mens Ancient Olympic chariot races. Ballooning, croquet and golf (1900) were once Olympic events in which women competed. Please see Statistics for more information. 1900 was the year the World Exhibition was scheduled to take place in Paris, with celebrations and events akin to our own Millennium celebrations. The Olympic Games were taking place at the same time, from 14th May to 28th October and were considered by many to be part of the World Exhibition. Some of the competitors did not know if they were in the Olympic Games or the World Fair. Happily for the women athletes of the time, the all male International Olympic Committee, who were very against women taking parts in sports, had little influence in Paris. The organisers of the World Exhibition seemed unconcerned about the rights and wrongs of women competing, so their presence was not an issue. Modern Pentathlon Organization Competitions Events The Pentathlon consisting of running the length of the stadium, jumping, throwing the spear, throwing the discus and wrestling was introduced for the first time at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, probably by the Spartans as a method of training soldiers. Admiration for the ancient Pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the Modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and he expressed his support for the concept of Pentathlon most eloquently and forcefully in his Memoires Olympiques published in 1931. The Modern Pentathlon is a combination of five totally different sports all working toward a common point total. The order of events has changed over the years to accommodate athletes and spectators. Shooting and fencing are now first and second, followed by swimming and horseback riding. The competition ends with a cross country run. Scoring in Modern Pentathlon is based on a standard 1,000 points for a good, or "par," performance. Excellent, or "above par" performances earn bonus points, and sub-standard, or "below-par," performances incur penalty points. The athlete who accumulates the most points over the course of the competition is the champion. Shooting Pistol shooting requires skills completely opposite from those of the other Modern Pentathlon sports. With a .177-caliber air pistol, over a 10-meter course, the athlete must suppress his natural tension and nervousness as he fires 20 shots at a stationary target. Only twice in Olympic history has a 200 point perfect score been achieved. In 1993, the introduction of a new Slowfire target with reduced bullseye, makes the perfect score that much more of an outstanding achievement. A target score of 172 will earn an athlete 1,000 pentathlon points, and each target point is worth a plus or minus 12 scoring points. The athlete has 40 seconds to fire each of the 20 shots.
