He persuaded the Olympic Committee to introduce Modem Pentathlon at the 5th Olympic Games of the modem era in Stockholm, Sweden in 1912. It was his belief that this event, above all others, "tested an athlete's moral qualities as much as their physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete." The choice of the five diverse and unrelated sports that make up the Modem Pentathlon arose out of a romantic vision of the wild adventures of a liaison officer whose horse is brought down in enemy territory. He defends himself with his pistol and sword, swims across a raging river and finally delivers the message on foot. Thus the modern pentathlon's five disciplines - show-jumping, shooting, fencing, swimming and cross-country running - were chosen.

In detail: Ancient Olympic Games Ruins of the training grounds at Olympia The origin of the Ancient Olympic Games has been lost in time, although there are many legends surrounding its origins. The first recorded celebration of the Games in Olympia was in 776 BC , although this was certainly not the first time they were held. The Games were then mostly a local affair, and only one event was contested, the stadion race.

History Disciplines Athletes Calendar ... Glossary
The roots of Modern Pentathlon can be traced to the ancient Pentathlon, which included the following five disciplines: discus throw, javelin, long jump, the stadium-length race, and wrestling. The ancient Pentathlon was incorporated into the ancient Olympic Games in 708 B.C., where Lambis Lakedaimonios was crowned the first Olympic victor. Pierre de Coubertin wished to include a combined sport into the programme of the modern Olympic Games, which would highlight the prototype of the multi-faceted “super athlete”, someone who combines strength, technique and a strong personality. Inspired by the ancient Pentathlon, he created the Modern pentathlon, a sport that combines technical disciplines such as Shooting, Fencing and Riding, together with strength and endurance disciplines like Swimming and Cross-country running.

Modern pentathlon is an exciting diverse sport, steeped in history dating back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece. The ancient pentathlon consisting of running the length of the stadium, jumping, throwing the spear, throwing the discus and wrestling was introduced for the first time at the 18th Olympiad in 708 BC, probably by the Spartans as a method of training soldiers. The earliest recorded winner of the ancient pentathlon was Lampis of Sparta, 2 707 years ago. Admiration for the ancient pentathlon was fully shared by the founder of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The modern pentathlon , introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm, Sweden, 1912, comprised of the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running, embracing the spirit of its ancient counterpart. It was De Coubertin's belief that it would be the event, above all others, that "tested a man's moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete". The choice of the five diverse and unrelated sports which make up the modern pentathlon arose out of the romantic adventures of a liaison officer whose horse is brought down in enemy territory. Having defended himself with his pistol and sword, he swims across a raging river and delivers the message on foot. Not surprisingly, it was the military which most enthusiastically adopted this new sport with its inherent demands of courage, coordination, physical fitness, self-discipline and flexibility in ever changing circumstances.

Modern Pentathlon is the most drastically restructured of all the events at the Atlanta Olympics. The traditional five-day event, catering for riding, fencing, shooting, swimming and running, has been severely restricted in size and reduced to a one-day competition. And for these Olympic Games at least there will be no teams event. Only 32 athletes will be allowed to compete, on the basis of strict selection guidelines. Australia has no athletes who qualify on merit, but will profit from the guarantee of one competitor from each of the five Continents. It is almost a matter of course that the representative from Oceania will be an Australian. The onus on the Australian Pentathlon Union to select a representative is very difficult, as athletes competing in lesser competitions can amass higher scores in some cases than athletes competing in elite competitions like the Olympic qualifiers. The two front runners for Australian selection were 24-year-old ex-Canberran Alex Johnson and 25-year-old Paul Christensen of Queensland.

The History of the Olympics Since the Olympic games go way back to the early Greeks, to do an entire history on one page is a bit overwhelming. So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games
The Nemean Games
The Isthmian Games
The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon. The pentathlon was composed of 5 different track and field competitions.

40. The Decathlon In Olympic History - DECA, The Decathlon Association
In one sense, modern decathlon history begins with the Thorpe story. The Greeks createdan allaround test, the pentathlon, for the ancient olympic Games.
http://www.decathlonusa.org/history.html
Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.
