There are five public school systems within the South County area: Affton School District, Bayless School District, Hancock Place School District, Lindbergh School District and Mehlville School District. The Mehlville School District encompasses the communities of Mehlville, Oakville, Concord and Lemay and serves the educational needs of about 12,000 children. The quality of the educational programs administered by all districts is second to none. From pre-school to college, classes are focused on life-long learning and targeted towards insuring the educational success of each student. The high quality education students receive is also evident in their annual ACT scores. In 1999, college-bound students in the South County District scored a composite 23.2 average, above the Missouri State average of 22.7 and the national average of 22.0. Schools in the district include: Beasley Elementary School, Bernard Elementary School, Bierbaum Elementary School, Blades Elementary School, Forder Elementary School, Hagemann Elementary School, Oakville Elementary School, Point Elementary School, Rogers Elementary School, Trautwein Elementary School, Wohlwend Elementary School, Buerkle Junior High School, Oakville Junior High, Washington Junior High School, Mehlville Senior High School and Oakville Senior High School. Oakville Senior High School serves students from the Oakville and Washington Junior High Schools and opened in the fall of 1970. The Arthur Voerg Commons area, completed in 1993, is a spectacular, three-story gathering place and focal point for the school. The lighted athletic stadium hosts football, track, baseball and soccer. OHS also features state-of-the-art science and technology facilities with modern computers.

St. Louis, Missouri's Job Growth May Improve Home Sales
More jobs means more home sales, and St. Louis, Missouri is adding jobs, according to local Realtors. In addition, it's a great place to live, they say. "Employment increased by 1,368 jobs in St. Louis City during April and May. However, the number of job seekers also increased," says Realtor Valerie Steele , "The combined effect of these two trends was an increase in the average monthly unemployment rate from 8.1 percent for the first quarter to 8.8 percent in the first two months of the second quarter. The solid job growth may provide strong home sales, while low mortgage rates should continue to spur sales. The average sales price in St. Louis City for the second quarter was $124,600, 1,294 homes were put on the market, 848 homes sold, 19 new homes were built, and the average number of days on market was 56." "More than 2.5 million people live in the Greater St. Louis region, which includes 12 counties covering 6,375 square miles in Missouri and Illinois, making it the 18th largest metropolitan area in the United States," says Realtor Barbara Bartelsmeyer . "Home to 15 Fortune 1000 companies such as Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., Emerson, May Department Stores and Graybar Electric, Greater St. Louis ranks sixth in the United States as a headquarters location for Fortune 500 companies. In addition to these major corporations, many entrepreneurial businesses flourish in the St. Louis area. In fact, St. Louis ranked 2nd in the U.S. in

EDUCATION UNIVERSITIES/VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS The Harry L. Crisp Bootheel Education Center (BEC) conveniently located in Malden , has provided quality higher educational opportunities to the area since January 1988. The educational programming provides both credit and noncredit courses. The success of the BEC is due largely to the cooperation among members of the Bootheel Educational Consortium. Members of the consortium include: Southeast Missouri State University, Three Rivers Community College, the University of Missouri Extension, and area vocational/technical schools. Also, specialized courses are occasionally offered by the University of Missouri Columbia. Approximately 70 classes are offered each semester for both day and evening students. Classes offered include a wide range of general education courses designed for transfer to a college as well as several for a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree. The BEC also offers a number of graduate classes from Southeast both on location and through Interactive Television. A number of surveys are periodically conducted by the Southeast staff to determine what educational needs are evident in the region. Specialized instruction; e.g., workshops, seminars, and training can be easily developed through the consortium partners. The BEC’s seminar room can accommodate as many as 100 people. Many of the workshops that have been offered have been targeted to meet the needs of area businesses and industries . Recent workshops have included: Statistical Process Control and Process Capability Analysis/ISO 9000 International Standard; MSDS's and Hazardous Waste; Total Preventive Maintenance; Manufacturing Safety Analysis; Total Quality Management; Wastewater Management; State and Local Law Enforcement Training.

Tax Incentives Tax Incentives have greatly expanded access to college. The majority of Southeast students are eligible for one or more educational tax benefits. In 1997 the Federal Taxpayer Relief Act was passed to help individuals and families pay for higher education. The following information regarding these tax incentive programs has been taken from the MOHELA “Tax Incentives” brochure. Please consult your tax preparer with any questions regarding these programs. Hope Scholarship Program
In brief: A tax credit valued at a maximum of $1500 per year for the first two years of college. The details: Eligible taxpayers may claim a nonrefundable Hope Scholarship Credit against their federal income taxes. Taxpayers must claim an eligible student as a dependent on their tax returns, unless the credit is for the taxpayers or their spouses (who also may be eligible students). For each student, taxpayers may receive a 100 percent tax credit for the first $1,000 of qualified out-of-pocket expenses. They also may claim a 50 percent credit on the second $1,000 for qualified expenses. Qualified expenses include tuition and required fees less any grants, scholarships and other tax-free educational assistance.
