Web Page: http://www.umsl.edu/divisions/optometry/optometry.html The UM-St. Louis School of Optometry enrolled its first class in 1980, graduating 32 students in May 1984. The school is located on the South Campus complex of the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 7800 Natural Bridge Road. A modern fivestory building houses the school's classrooms, laboratories, research facilities, administrative offices, healthscience library, and the Center for Eye Care campus facility (the University Eye Center).
The University Eye Center located on campus is open to the public, as well as to the faculty, staff, and students of the university. The primary goal of the center is to provide patients with highquality vision care. This purpose is consistent with the overall goal of training wellqualified eye care practitioners.
In addition to the University Eye Center, the school operates the Optometric Center of St. Louis, a comprehensive optometric eye care facility in the Central West End of the city and the East St. Louis Eye Center, jointly owned and operated by the University of Missouri-St. Louis School of Optometry and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Situated in Missouri's largest metropolitan area, the school enjoys the city's strong community and professional support. The urban setting offers many opportunities for outreach programs, expanding the scope of optometric education and making available highly diverse programs of clinical training. Another asset of the school is the location of the national headquarters of the American Optometric Association and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, approximately twelve miles from the campus.

"Hell, I Saved The School": George E. Ladd. And The Missouri School Of Mines And Metallurgy, 1897-1907
By: Dr. Larry Gragg
Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1864, Ladd attended Harvard University where he recieved three degrees, including a Ph.D., in Geology and where he had the good fortune to study with Nathaniel Shaler, the nation's leading geologist. Following his graduation in 1894, Ladd pursued further study at the University of Munich. While completing his graduate studies, Ladd taught an occasional course at Harvard and served as Assistant Geologist in both Texas and Missouri and for the U.S. Geological Survey. When MSM offered him the position of Director, Ladd was employed as Assistant Geologist and Chemist for the Georgia Geological Survey. Upon his arrival in Rolla, Ladd and his wife Mary had four children. The Missouri School of Mines he had agreed to direct had a small, poorly maintained campus with few students. Bounded by Eleventh, Main, Fourteenth, and State streets, the campus had only four buildings: the Rolla Building, the campus's original structure; a Chemistry Laboratory; a Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory; and a student dormitory which became the Director's (and now Chancellor's) residence during Ladd's tenure. The latter building was not being used, and the exterior walls of both the Rolla Building and the Mining Building had serious cracks. The buildings were lit by gas from a tank buried in back of the Chemical Laboratory. Most water for the campus had to be hauled from the nearby Frisco stock pond. With no sanitary sewer system available, all had to use the frame toilets located on the west side of the campus. The only attractive feature of the campus was its nicely graded and trimmed lawn "surrounded by a neat stone wall surmounted by a low iron fence."

    State Capital Bureau
JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri General Assembly ended its legislative session Friday with House members continuing their tradition of tossing papers in the air when the gavel banged at 6 p.m., senators paying tribute to their Democratic leader and Gov. Mel Carnahan claiming a victorious session full of legislation designed to benefit children. "It was a session of new opportunity," Carnahan said at a press conference afterward. He cited child care and Medicaid expansion as examples of bills that focus on Missouri's children. The governor was flanked by Rep. Steve Gaw, D-Moberly, and Sen. Bill McKenna, D-Barnhart, the Senate president pro tem, who was serving his last year as a senator the first victim of term limits. "I really feel the Lord sent this man to us at a time when we needed it and brought us together and we accomplished some things that I never could have believed we could have done this year," said Sen. John Schneider, D-St. Louis County, in tribute to McKenna during the closing minutes of the Senate session. Republicans, however, said the legislature's work was "good news and bad news."

The Fraternity awards the Oxford Cup in recognition of achievement of the highest order by a Beta. Recipients must be loyal members of Beta Theta Pi who have brought honor to the Fraternity through distinguished service and accomplishments in their chosen professional fields.
Hugh Edward Stephenson, Jr., Missouri '43
Hugh Stephenson has built Beta Theta Pi and its Zeta Phi chapter a legacy of dedication, devotion and sensitivity. Many say his practice of these attributes has been daily. A distinguished cardio-thoracic surgeon, developer of the first resuscitation unit, also known as the defibrillator, he is credited with leadership in the effort to establish a four-year medical school at University of Missouri, Columbia. Important in this fight were his persistent lobbying of state legislators; his performance at the 1951 hearing to establish Columbia, rather than Kansas City, as site of Missouri's first state-funded medical school.
He was Beta Theta Pi General Fraternity president, 1978-81, after having served as vice president 1973-76. He had been a district chief 1967-73. Along the way he also had been chapter counselor, a house corporation board member, chairman of the fund-raising campaign for a new chapter house and currently serves as faculty advisor. A major addition to the Zeta Phi chapter house has been named the Hugh E. Stephenson, Jr. Annex.
