The Media Center We've Been NIMDAed! by Mary Alice Anderson Lead Media Specialist, Winona Middle School, Winona, Minnesota MultiMedia Schools • March/April 2002 Three months later we were still coping with the consequences. N IMDA, the fast-spreading worm that affected primarily PCs and ISS servers, arrived at our school September 19 last year. Fortunately, our network specialist acted fast and "pulled the plug" on our servers. That quick action saved us from total disruption of all workstations. As we are primarily a Macintosh school, individual computers were not affected. The disruption instead was to servers, instructional capabilities, and staff morale. We were not alone. Thousands of Web sites were knocked out; thousands of computers were attacked. Thousands of teachers were without grading systems. Countless students lost access to files and online databases. And, hundreds of administrators and office staff could not access student records. Three months later we were still coping with the consequences.
De-Circ'ed
Our first noticeable impact was the online catalog and circulation system. Thinking the problem would only last a day or two, we began writing down patron and material bar code numbers as students checked out materials. By the third day we switched to entering information in an Appleworks database so we would have a searchable record.

Today the Lutie R-VI school district continues to grow at a steady pace. The 1997-98 enrollment reached 250 students; 145 in kindergarten program though 8th grade, and 105 in 9th through 12th grade. The kindergarten program has been enlarged to a full-day program and in the fall an Infant Daycare program was begun. The district has also begun a successful Parents as Teachers Program which is open to all families with children age 5 and under.
It is the belief of the Board of Education, the facility, and staff at Lutie R-VI that all students should be assisted in their efforts to achieve their maximum potential as worthy, contributing members of society. It is the vision of the Lutie R-VI School District to empower all students to succeed in a changing world.
In addition to all of the above, Lutie has also been designated as a K-12 Accelerated School, has entered into a consortium with South Central ATVS at West Plains to send junior and senior high school students interested in a wider range of vocational classes to West Plains beginning in the fall of 1998. Also beginning in the fall of 1998, seniors will be able to attend SMSU at West Plains and take college classes for Dual Credit which can transfer to any public institution in the nation. An articulation agreement with Ozark Technical College in Springfield will allow junior and senior level students to enroll in Dual Credit classes in Auto Collision Technology.
