In an effort to address the immediate concerns of the Colorado education community, the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence (CSPV) introduced the Safe Communities-Safe Schools initiative in the fall of 1999. This project will consist of the following strategies that will be available to all school communities in Colorado: information about the Safe Communities-Safe Schools Model, technical assistance, publications, web site, information house, media campaign, and a long-term response plan.

The coalition, formed in 1994, involves more than 1,500 educators, police, and youth workers in activities and stimulates the creation of community-based violence prevention coalitions. It has assisted schools in developing new violence prevention programs and facilitated networking and information sharing among members through bimonthly forums, major conferences, training seminars, task groups, youth involvement, and in-depth consultation and technical assistance to schools and communities.

Library Media Program Objectives :
Defining the Librarian's Responsibilities and Evaluation
Objectives
Objectives for school library media programs adhere to the concepts found in the Information Power guidelines . Defining objectives is a function of the school library media specialist in partnership with administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents. Objectives for the program become the school librarian's responsibility within the school and the library. The school librarian's evaluation should be based on the performance of those defined responsibilites. Here are some examples of program objectives that a school library media center might have, illustrated with sample action items (the school librarian's responsibilities). Learning and Teaching Objective:
We will provide resources and activities to promote student achievement and teacher knowledge, working collaboratively to help students achieve the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and district learning requirements. (Sample action items here)
Information Access and Delivery Objective
We will provide access to information technologies, print resources, and systems, working collaboratively to help students and teachers achieve academic and personal success.

To ease the school-to-career transition, the Independence Chamber of Commerce presents the CHOICES® program to Independence, Fort Osage and Grain Valley eighth- and ninth-graders. Choices® is a successful national program that teaches students about motivation, time management, academic decisions and career consequences. It is a clear example of how education and business can work together to benefit students as they prepare for adult life. Trained presenters, drawn from the Chamber’s business-member representatives, lead interactive seminars that show students that every decision has a consequence. Presenters use eye-opening examples to get the class involved in money-management and make real-world connections between school and work.

May 1997 ATSDR AND EPA Warn the Public About Continuing Patterns of Metallic Mercury Esposure Metallic mercury is a hazardous chemical that can cause serious health problems. Children (especially very young children) and fetuses are most vulnerable. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), part of the U.S. Public Health Service, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are jointly issuing an alert to the general public. There is a continuing pattern of metallic mercury exposure in children and teenagers and in persons using certain folk medicines or participating in certain ethnic or religious practices.
It is important for the general public to understand that either short-term or long-term exposures to metallic mercury can lead to serious health problems. Human exposure to metallic mercury occurs primarily from breathing contaminated air. Other forms of mercury can be absorbed by drinking contaminated water, eating food (usually fish containing mercury), and from skin contact. At high levels, metallic mercury can cause effects on the nervous system and the developing fetus. Other forms of mercury can damage other organs. Even at low levels, metallic mercury can cause health problems.

In the original print format, there were several pages inserted (i.e. ALA, AASL, and DESE documents). It was not possible to "insert" those pages in the process of converting the file to pdf. Missouri School for the Blind Guidelines for Lending Library Media Center Materials to Missouri Schools The APH Librarian works with the School Librarian to lend materials to Missouri Schools upon request when MSB students, faculty, or staff are not using the materials. MSB lends the materials to teachers or other school staff for use by their students. The school’s teacher or other staff member is responsible for returning the book on time and in good condition. When a request is received, if the material requested by the school is not available from the APH Materials Center (APHMC) Library, the APH Librarian may see if it is available from the MSB Library Media Center). The APH Librarian gets permission from the School Librarian on a case-by-case basis to lend materials. The School Librarian takes into account the number of copies held, circulation history, class assignments anticipated, subject area holdings, and rarity and replacement value of materials. The APH Librarian or the School Librarian may choose not to fill a request if the requesting school has a poor materials-return record. Materials are eligible for loan according to this table: Eligible Ineligible Large type - All circulating Tapes (Audio and Video) Braille - All circulating Reference Materials CD-ROMs Kits Professional Library Materials Regular Print Materials Picture Books Periodicals A dual checkout system is used: one for APHMC and one for the LMC.

The bill, which is sponsored by Alderman Terry Kennedy , would create a Civilian Review Board for the St. Louis Police Department. This would be in addition to the 'pretend' oversight board that Mayor Slay initiated a few weeks ago which is NOT independent of the police department. The board that Alderman Kennedy is trying to form would be an independent organ of the city government with its own office in City Hall. It would consist of four elected officials from four different districts in the city, and it would have three appointed officials appointed by the Mayor and the Police Board of Commissioners. As it currently stands, one of the appointed officials would have to come from an organization with a background in fighting against police misconduct and abuse.
