Becomming A Journalist
Question
Dear Carolyn,
I'm only seventeen years old, but I'm alreaty thinking about my future and career goals. My ultimate holy grail goal is to be a a novilist, or write a screenplay, or get a few books of poetry published, but even if that did happen theres not guarentee that any of that would be enough to support myself and or a whole family. Anyway, the basis of my question is really what degree, or degrees are acceptable to be hired in a position of jornalism/reporting. I looked in a college refrence book and found only 4 schools teaching Journalism, a bunch teaching creative writing (which would be my top choice), and then there were also literature majors, english majors, and court reporting majors; though those last three don't intrest me very much. Lastly, how much would positions as a journalist pay, like starting out, higher up, different companies, ect. Thanks! David!

    by Allan R. Andrews

ASHINGTON I keep telling my son, one of the shortest boys in his seventh-grade class, that powerful and influential things come in small packages. I use examples of dynamite, poison and viruses. Unfortunately, my examples appear negative or morbid. I've recently brainstormed more positive examples: computer chips, steering mechanisms and the ancient model of big trouble, the tongue. I've yet to try those out on my rising adolescent. Our chats often occur while I'm reading a magazine, and I'm tempted to tell him that magazines are small items with powerful impacts. I sometimes tell him ideas begin small and grow into influential movements - in a sense, the most powerful things in the world but he's still looking for something concrete on which to pin a hope for bigness. Ah, well, I conclude, genes are little, powerful - and often slow things. My teenage growth spurt didn't arrive until I was 16. But while I'm thinking about it, let me suggest some powerful small stuff one can find in type. The trend in journalism has taken newspapers toward the shorter story or, the smaller story leaving lengthy expositions to supplements and magazines. Magazines, however, refusing to be limited, have devised a few shorts to be powerful features in their print arsenal.

“The importance of a free press”
By Dallas Buchanan Aurora High School Many top stories in the news have focused on the freedom of the press. People are fighting over what can and cannot be posted on the Internet, or what can or cannot be said in newspapers, magazines, or books. From the time this country began, the freedom of the press has been a vital artery in the circulatory system of America. When drafting the Bill of Rights to the Constitution of the United States, our forefathers set forth the First Amendment which states that all people have the freedom of speech, or religion, and of the press. This addition to the Constitution gives all Americans the right to have pure, uncensored freedom of the press. The freedom of the press is important not only to journalists for their works; its has a larger importanceit is vital to the system of democracy as a whole. Our governmental system depends on this freedom.
