Tennessee Army National Guard Spc. Michael Parson speaks with authority about two things that matter most to National Guard troops involved in the war against terrorism these days: serving in the Army's total force and the extent to which some civilian employers are supporting the troops. Parson has good reports on both accounts. He belongs to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 115th Field Artillery, that today completed a month of condensed military police training at this central Missouri post. Next stop is Hawaii, where Parson and about 100 other soldiers in that company will pull garrison duty for the next year. Parson is a patrol officer, as well as a medic, a training officer and a member of the tactical team, for the Jackson, Tenn., Police Department. That makes him one of just a few citizen-soldiers in that artillery battalion who are civilian police officers and who have earned their MP crests. The training has not been all that demanding or different from the training he underwent nearly 10 years ago to become a policeman, explained Parson, who said he was physically and mentally prepared for the challenge.

State and University Open Tech Park at Ft. Leonard Wood by Kim Dill In this Issue Archives

With little public input or scrutiny, the University of Missouri System has become a partner in building a new “technology park” at Ft. Leonard Wood. The UM System and the state of Missouri, in a time of severe budget cuts, have each invested $1 million in the first phase of a project that will ultimately require many times this sum. According to the project’s Web site, the mission of the “park,” which is a joint venture of the University and the Missouri Dept. of Economic Development under its subsidiary the Missouri Technology Corporation, is to provide facilities for contractors that would “support or enhance military missions or activities.” No one seems to be asking whether this is consistent with, or furthers the mission of, the University, however. To date, only one 18,000 square-foot structure housing office space and executive suites has been built. Other facilities will follow as the demand for more tenant space increases. Current plans call for 250,000 square feet (38 percent of the land) in the first five years – 125,000 in office space, 100,000 in classrooms and labs, 15,000 in large equipment training facility and 10,000 for warehouse/distribution operation for parcel delivery. This plan does not include space for the university to expand educational offerings on the military base. The university would have to explore this as a separate option.
