MOREnet Completes Network Capacity Upgrade
On May 26, 2004, MOREnet completed a network upgrade that quadrupled the speed at which information can travel over the MOREnet backbone and increased the bandwidth available for Internet access. Planning, contracting and implementing an upgrade such as the one just completed requires a considerable amount of time. MOREnet has implemented this upgrade at this time in anticipation of customers' needs for several years to come. Since the overall cost of bandwidth has decreased, MOREnet was able to provide its customers with the increased bandwidth at no additional cost. Read the entire article

While at the University of Arizona 1876 was a banner year for libraries in the United States. Almost every introductory course in schools of library and information science will list all the things that happened in that year:
In No Particular Order:
1. The American Library Association is founded. Library Journal is founded. 3. The first edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification is published. 4. Custer got creamed. 5. The U.S. Bureau of Education publishes Public Libraries in the United States of America: Their History, Condition, and Management, widely referred to as the 1876 Report The title page for the 1876 Report is the background image for this and succeeding pages, and is reproduced in more legible form here Most librarians, even the non-historically minded, need no introduction to the first four events listed above. Well, ok, number 4 is a ringer. The others are all still with us, albeit in rather different form than their 19th Century origins. The 1876 Report is rather a different matter. It is, to be sure, widely cited. Jesse Shera and Sidney Ditzion in writing on public libraries make extensive use of the document.[

Amy Cheney Beach Collection
Amy Cheney Beach (1867-1944) was America's foremost composer of the Romantic period and a virtuoso concert pianist. A musical prodigy, Beach studied with Ernest Perabo, Carl Baermann, and Junius W. Hill. She began composing at age four and at seven made her first public appearance, playing some of her own waltzes. During 1884 and 1885 Beach performed 12 recitals, the most noteworthy occuring in March and April, 1885, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After marrying Dr. H.H.A Beach that same year she concentrated on composition until her husband's death in 1910, at which time she resumed her concert career. Beach toured in Europe as a pianist from 1911-1914. Amy Beach was best known for her songs, and two Browning settings, Ah, Love, but a Day and The Year's at the Spring , which achieved considerable popularity during her lifetime. The Amy Cheney Beach Collection includes the one-act opera Cabildo , op. 149;

51. Literary Pilgrimages
Travels to some of the places that Mark Twain lived and worked, including his Hartford, Connecticut home and Hannibal, missouri.
http://faculty.quinnipiac.edu/libraries/tballard/mtpilgrimages.html
Hannibal's two most renowned citizens are immortalized in a downtown park. I've followed Mark Twain all around the world - it seems like anywhere I've been, he got there first. So far my favorite spots with Twain connections are Maui (He loved the place so much that he couldn't even write while he was there), Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, and Paris (which he hated).
Virginia City managed to give a flavor
of what it must have been like in the 1860's.
The city is built along the side of a mountain,
so each street is even with the rooftops
of the street before - you could imagine how Twain
made his famous rooftop dance with Artemus Ward.
We played the slots in the Mark Twain saloon
and my wife experienced the kind of luck
that Clemens was blessed with:
the good news was that she got 7 plums in a row.
The bad news was that she only bet a nickel. Betting 35 cents would have netted her a thousand dollars. We did win enough to pay for the train ride to the next town. At the Territorial Enterprise offices, there is a toilet seat in the printing room with the sign "Mark Twain sat here."
