Thousands of new books headed to Missouri libraries from Toys R Us settlement with Attorney General Nixon
Jefferson City, Mo. The new school year will bring thousands of new books to 46 school districts, libraries and organizations in Missouri that are eligible to benefit from a settlement between Attorney General Jay Nixon, Toys R Us and three other major toy makers. Nixon and state Attorneys General nationwide sued the toy manufacturers in 1999, alleging the companies conspired to withhold some popular toys from discount and warehouse chains in a price-fixing scheme. "The actions of the toy makers affected children and their parents, and it is appropriate that the court order directs this money to the benefit of children. I am pleased that the emphasis will be on children's reading programs," Nixon said. "This is an outstanding opportunity to secure new books for libraries and to help instill a lifelong love of reading and learning in our children." Nixon is teaming up with the national Reading is Fundamental program to distribute the books to Missouri libraries selected by RIF to benefit from the $258,830 award to the state. The award will provide for more than 20,000 new books appropriate for grades K-3 and an additional $26,599 in direct grant money, allowing distribution of books for ownership to children in RIF programs in Missouri.

OCLC now offering services for groups
OCLC now offers services that allow consortia to build group online union catalogs and provide resource sharing and reference services under one locally customized interface. OCLC group catalogs are based on library holdings set in WorldCat. OCLC creates a catalog from WorldCat holdings contributed by group members so that library users can find what they need close to home. If users are unable to find what they need in their local area, they can expand their search to a larger region within the group, or to the entire WorldCat database for what they need. “Creating a group catalog is like creating your own slice of WorldCat—a subset of the world’s most comprehensive database of bibliographic information,” said Frank Hermes, Vice President, OCLC Cooperative Discovery Services. “Libraries can leverage the investment they have already made in cataloging with WorldCat. And basing a group catalog on WorldCat affords scalability, allowing the catalog to be searched for items held within the group—or held anywhere in the world.” Gathering holdings information within a group helps facilitate item discovery and resource sharing through OCLC services that many libraries in the group are currently using. Libraries that do not use WorldCat for cataloging can batchload records into the database to make their holdings information available for a group catalog. And libraries can customize and brand their group catalog—for example, they can add logos for both the group and for a library within the group.

The Maps Collection is part of the Government Documents and Maps Department and is located in the lower level of Meyer Library. In the collection you will find maps, atlases, geographic reference works, aerial photographs, globes and travel information. These materials are collectively known as cartographic materials. Map Resources
Atlases are collections of general and/or thematic maps bound together in a book. Most atlases include an index to all the place names shown on the maps. The collection includes general and thematic atlases of the world, continents, countries, states, counties and cities.
Geographic reference works are acquired to support the map and atlas collections. These works include encyclopedias, gazetteers, mapping software, and works on historical cartography.
Aerial photographs are the most accurate record of what actually existed on the ground at the time the photo was taken. Our extensive collection of aerial photos covering southwest Missouri includes coverage from 1936 to 1996. They are arranged alphabetically by county, then by photo number; with indexes for each county.
