Abstract:

The " " website showcases these maps that depict the course of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as they journeyed with the Corps of Discovery across territorial Missouri in 1804. The maps featured on the website offer an extraordinary vision of the world they encountered – a world virtually unknown to white civilization.

Missouri Partnership Project
Summary of Project
The Missouri Partnership Project, consisting of the Cape Girardeau area, is a collaborative effort between the U.S Geological Survey (USGS), the City of Cape Girardeau, and Cape Girardeau County. The project highlights The National Map requirements for conducting partnerships involving one or more USGS disciplines and local government entities, as well as investigating Web-based mapping technologies. Project objectives are to integrate, share, and disseminate a variety of data. This will be accomplished by integrating the eight USGS data layers or themes with geologic data themes. Working at both the city and the county levels will provide a better understanding of issues associated with the best available data themes, local data standards, metadata, and data sharing and maintenance. In addition, this project enables the geography and geology disciplines of the USGS the opportunity to collaborate and exchange ideas and expertise in their respective fields.
Project Data Description
Geospatial data will be assembled from Federal, State, regional, and local sources, at a scale of 1:24,000 or greater. The primary data coverage will be based on the eight data themes of

AR-KS-MO Regional National Map Project
This project provides a fundamental building block for The National Map : multi-State data. The compelling achievement stitches together different geospatial data residing on servers in Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri. The data are from different sources, based upon different schemas, but will be styled in such a way that information will appear as though its all one source. The achievement will eliminate a common barrier found in many approaches in solving geographic problems where the data ends at the State borders. Scientists and researchers in Missouri and Arkansas will be able to use geographic data together to study water quality in the famed White River watershed. The same could be said for economic and business developers in southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri exploring ways to spark rural economies using geographic information from both sides of the State line.
Previous The National Map Partnership Projects have approached other technical challenges in implementing The National Map . This pilot however, is the first of its kind to involve statewide geographic databases from three different States. While the effort is a major technical challenge, it could not have been accomplished without the strong bond between geographic administrators and decisionmakers in these States. Each of the three States are active participants in a multi-State consortium known as the

The Dissected Til Plains portion of the northern plains region lies in the portion of the state north of the Missouri river, while the Osage plains portion extends into the southwestern portion of the state bordering the Ozark Plateau. Thus the northern plains covers an area slightly more than a third of the state. This region is a beautiful, rolling country, with a great abundance of streams.

Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri
James D. Harlan and James M. Denny
Foreword by Matt Blunt "For years to come the Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri will serve scholars and Lewis and Clark aficionados alike as the standard geographic reference work on the great expedition's Missouri chapters. The combined maps and text convey a sense of time and place that will enable armchair explorers to experience vicariously the Corps of Discovery's laborious trek across Missouri."William E. Foley The Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri is a splendid re- creation of the natural landscape in the days when a vast western frontier was about to be explored. The Corps of Discovery's expedition began in territorial Missouri, and this book of computer-generated maps opens an extraordinary window onto the rivers, land, and settlement patterns of the period. This book is an intensive examination of the Missouri portion of the expedition through a series of twenty-seven maps developed by combining early-nineteenth-century U.S. General Land Office (GLO) survey documents with narratives of the trip derived from expedition journals. The maps are impeccable. The twenty-seven map platesincluding twenty-three of the traveled route and four of the river corridor's historic vegetative land coverdepict the expedition's course and offer the first accurate rendering of travel distances and campsites. Some maps locate the campsites in relation to present-day landmarks. Journal descriptions accompany the map plates, which also include old geographic names; historical hydrography; contemporary towns, settlements, and forts; Indian campsites and villages; and territorial land grants from the French and Spanish governments. Geographers and historians will be fascinated by the maps' level of detail, especially the charting of the present course of the rivers alongside that of the early 1800s to show the landscape changes caused by the powerful waters of the Mississippi and Missouri.

A new national collection of very detailed demographic profiles based on the 2000 Census Summary File 3, generated using code developed by a national State Data Center consortium , are now available on the MCDC site. The new reports complement reports previously generated for counties and places in Missouri and other selected states. The new reports are for larger geographic entities for the entire United States. The home page for the new series contains links to the main menu pages for each of the 4 geographic groups. Those are states, places of 50,000+, metro areas (complete and within-state) and a combined grouping of US Totals, Regions and Divisions. An index page (pdf format) has been created that can serve as a reference for those trying to figure out which profiles contain data on what subjects and based on which SF3 tables.
