The maps are called all sorts of things, including "plats," "charts," "section maps," "topologic maps," "quadrangle maps," "geographical maps" and "contour maps." Even the professionals who use them on a daily basis shorten their name in various ways, including "top," "topo," and "topog." The topography of Missouri is a unique blend of natural features such as prairies, rolling hills, narrow ridges, mountainlike terrain, broad plateaus, meandering floodplains, lowlands, forests, streams, valleys, sinkholes, bluffs and rock outcrops. Superimposed upon these natural features and mingled with them are man-made features both old and new of every imaginable kind.

M arion County Missouri Marion County Conservation Map ... Hannibal, Missouri Aerial view of the city as it appeared in 1869, in the Panoramic Maps collection, Library of Congress. 1895 County Map How can maps help? Maps are made for many reasons, and as a result, vary in content. Some maps made for general purposes may show roads, towns and cities, rivers and lakes, parks, and State and local boundaries. New and old maps often reveal changing place names, and they may also show changes in the boundaries of nations and their subdivisions. They rarely name individual landowners or residents.
In the United States, birth, death, property, and some other kinds of records are normally kept by county governments. If you can name the place where a kin lived, new or old maps of that place may also show the county seat where useful data about your kin may be obtained. Searches for data about an ancestor are often complicated by changes in the names and boundaries of places.

http://ludwig.missouri.edu/247/
Welcome to Geography 247 The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the basics of map reading and interpretation. Basic concepts such as projections, coordinate systems, scale and direction are introduced and reinforced through lab exercises and lecture material. In addition the course looks at how maps can be used to communicate information in a variety of ways. From professionally prepared cartographic data to maps appearing almost daily in the newspapers and magazines, a variety of map sources and types are used to illustrate how maps can speak a language of their own. Two major projects will be assigned for this course using USGS topographic maps and aerial photographs. Knowledge of basic internet skills and an understanding of GIS software and graphic software packages will be used as a basis for mapping a variety of thematic topics. Computer Information Proficiency.
This class is approved as a "CIP" (Computer Information Proficiency) class. Therefore, the integration of computers and computer technology will be an integral part of this class. We will be using a server located on the campus computer backbone and the internet for most assignments.
