Overview
This help file presents information regarding each of the geographic units ("geocodes") that occur in the MABLE database and that can be accessed by the geocorr engine. Unless otherwise specified all codes are FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard). Unless explicitly stated otherwise all codes in MABLE are based on the Census Bureau's 1990 ZIP-Block Equivalency file . Thus, geocodes such as ZIPs and places which routinely change (boundaries change, new ones are added and old ones are deleted) will not be current - they will be as of 1990 (or 1991, in the special case of the ZIP codes - for details see the ZIP entry , below.) The Missouri State Census Data Center and OSEDA maintain a library of geographic code modules in the form of SAS(r) format codes. These modules have special application for SAS software users since they allow codes to be readily converted to their corresponding names. Sometimes format modules are used not to provide names, but rather to link codes to other entities as a kind of table lookup. Note that although these modules are technically "code" you do not have to be a programmer, or know any SAS, to use these as codebook files to look up a geographic code. If you would like to retrieve any of these modules for use at your site you can click [HERE] and be able to use FTP to get the files you want. Or you may prefer to access the FTP site on your own. The address is oseda.missouri.edu, login as anonymous and "cd" to pub and then to mablfmts.

Jim Harlan MISSOURI (June 2002) - The idea for the Lewis and Clark Historic Landscape Project came from Kenneth Winn, the Missouri State Archivist, who recruited Jim Harlan, a geographer, to create a historically accurate representation of the Missouri River. Harlan has been mapping Missouri's historic vegetation patterns for a decade. With information from the earliest land surveys and notes from the explorers' observations housed in the Missouri State Archives, Harlan of the Geographic Resources Center in the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Geography has used advanced computer technology (Geographic Information Systems or GIS) to create handsome maps of pre-settlement Missouri. This work permits viewers to see the Missouri River area as it was experienced by Lewis and Clark nearly 200 years ago. Harlan's intended audience is primarily middle schools and libraries. He avows that he does not create curriculum; rather he amasses data and makes it available for those who want to use it. But in addition to their visual appeal, the maps and GIs data provide potential learning tools for students to access a collection of information related to historical people and places, then to use this information for their own exploration and discoveries.
