The production of digital cartographic data and graphic maps comprises the largest component of the USGS National Mapping Program NMP ). Cartographic data are compiled from aerial photographs, other remotely sensed images, historical records, legal documents, and direct field observations and surveys and comply with standards of content, geometric accuracy, and presentation. Modern, automated equipment is used in this process, replacing the labor-intensive processes of the past. The NMP incorporates the documented needs of 40 Federal agencies and the 50 States, which are solicited and analyzed as part of a continuous requirements assessment process. Printed Maps
Topographic Quadrangle Maps
The USGS 's most familiar product is the 1:24,000-scale Topographic Quadrangle Map. This is the primary scale of data produced, and depicts greater detail for a smaller area than intermediate-scale (1:50,000 and 1:100,000) and small-scale (1:250,000, 1:2,000,000 or smaller) products, which show selectively less detail for larger areas.
Orthophotoquads
Orthophotoquads are distortion-free aerial photographs that are formatted and printed as standard 7.5 minute, 1:24,000-scale quadrangles (15-minute in Alaska) or as quarter quadrangles at a scale of 1:12,000.

Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri
James D. Harlan and James M. Denny
Foreword by Matt Blunt "For years to come the Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri will serve scholars and Lewis and Clark aficionados alike as the standard geographic reference work on the great expedition's Missouri chapters. The combined maps and text convey a sense of time and place that will enable armchair explorers to experience vicariously the Corps of Discovery's laborious trek across Missouri."William E. Foley The Atlas of Lewis and Clark in Missouri is a splendid re- creation of the natural landscape in the days when a vast western frontier was about to be explored. The Corps of Discovery's expedition began in territorial Missouri, and this book of computer-generated maps opens an extraordinary window onto the rivers, land, and settlement patterns of the period. This book is an intensive examination of the Missouri portion of the expedition through a series of twenty-seven maps developed by combining early-nineteenth-century U.S. General Land Office (GLO) survey documents with narratives of the trip derived from expedition journals. The maps are impeccable. The twenty-seven map platesincluding twenty-three of the traveled route and four of the river corridor's historic vegetative land coverdepict the expedition's course and offer the first accurate rendering of travel distances and campsites. Some maps locate the campsites in relation to present-day landmarks. Journal descriptions accompany the map plates, which also include old geographic names; historical hydrography; contemporary towns, settlements, and forts; Indian campsites and villages; and territorial land grants from the French and Spanish governments. Geographers and historians will be fascinated by the maps' level of detail, especially the charting of the present course of the rivers alongside that of the early 1800s to show the landscape changes caused by the powerful waters of the Mississippi and Missouri.

The historic landscape-mapping project has captured the public's imagination since its debut in summer 2001 with a series of press conferences conducted by Secretary of State Matt Blunt. Feature articles appeared in New York Times Boston Globe Chicago Tribune St. Louis Post-Dispatch Kansas City Star , and many other newspapers. In addition, a feature article in the April 2002 issue of National Geographic significantly increased interest in the project. The project maps will be distributed in a variety of formats. A companion map book, , will be published by the University of Missouri Press (Spring 2003). Select poster-size maps, suitable for framing, will be available at various venues across the state. An interactive map server and virtual reality tour of the Missouri River are available online. The maps will also be featured in a traveling exhibit at venues across the state from 2003 to 2006; the exhibit opens in Jefferson City on February 6, 2003.

The state's nickname is the Show Me State ; the U.S. Post Office abbreviation for Missouri is MO History Originally part of the Louisiana Purchase, Missouri was admitted as a state in 1821 as part of the Missouri Compromise. It earned the nickname "Gateway to the West" because it served as a departure point for settlers heading to the west. During the American Civil War, Missouri, a slave state, was split with portions adhering to the Union, and others seceding with the southern states. Law and Government The current constitution of Missouri, the fourth constitution for the state, was adopted in 1945 and provides for 3 branches of government, the legislative, judicial and executive branches. The legislative branch consists of two bodies, the House of Representatives and the Senate. These bodies comprise the General Assembly of the State of Missouri.

At the dawn of the 19th century, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked on an unprecedented journey from St. Louis, Missouri to the Pacific Ocean and back again. Their assignment was to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and record the geography, flora, fauna, and people they encountered along the way. The tale of their incredible journey, meticulously recorded in their journals, has become an American classic. This single-volume, landmark edition of the famous journals is the first abridgement to be published in at least a decade. Series editor Anthony Brandt and Lewis and Clark scholar Herman J. Viola have reviewed all 13 volumes of the text to include a more balanced account of encounters with Native Americans and have, for the first time in print, corrected Lewis and Clark’s famously bad spelling. This new edition presents the journey’s impressive highlights—from first encounters with grizzly bears and meetings with the Sioux and Crow Indians, to the near starvation in the Bitterroot Mountains and confrontation with the Blackfeet Indians. Brief connecting accounts from the editors seamlessly link connected passages and illuminate details of the expedition that are missing or obscure in the text.

Two Missouris (1800/2000)
James Harlan interview
Who are these guys from 1815, what are they doing out there? They're surveying for the General Land Office for the United States. They hired a corps of surveyors. They'd walk these lines, describe what they saw, and make a value-assessment: first rate, second rate, third rate, primarily for farming or timber. And they would rate the timber: good, bad, thin, sparse. They'd give a description of the other vegetation, the under-story. They'd say they were in barrens the old term barrens, being an opening in the forest or open beautiful prairie. So we get the divisions between forest, woodland, open woodland, barrens, and where the prairie was. Today's river is fourteen foot deep, and a half mile wide. Well, that river back then was a mile or two miles wide, and four foot deep, full of sand, cottonwood trees and islands. That keelboat, I believe I read it was necessary for them to have about four feet of draft, well, that's the reason they wound up dragging that thing to Montana, because they had a hell of a time trying to find deep enough water where they could sail openly. Plus the sand was shifting back and forth on them all the time, they had all sorts of problems, breaking the mast, the boat getting caught in eddies and sand, and turning around on them. I can look at that old river, and see why they had problems in there. Why were these survey guys out there?

1,324 feet The Salem Plateau Natural Section is a broad, gentle plain that was originally forested to a great extent but is now characterized by open pastureland and scattered trees. Bottomland deciduous forests remain along many streams. The Lower Ozarks Natural Section is richly forested and characterized by springs, caves, sinkholes, calcareous wet meadows, glades, clear, high-gradient streams and steep-sided hills with narrow, chert-covered ridges. Short-leaf pine (Pinus echinata) is also characteristic. Streams flow generally southward and include the St. Francis, Black, Current and Eleven Point rivers. The St. Francois Mountains Natural Section is the area of greatest relief and elevation in Missouri. There are few springs, caves or other karst features in this natural section. The pre-settlement vegetation of pine and mixed pine-oak still predominates. The White River and Elk River natural sections are both characterized by steep terrain and deciduous forest mixed with some pine. Glades are common, especially in the White River drainage. Construction of reservoirs (Table Rock, Taneycomo and Bull Shoals lakes), has created habitat for a few wetland-associated breeding birds while inundating habitat for bottomland forest species.

Updated May 2004 Following is a list of current course equivalents between Northwest Missouri State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; credit at NU is stated in semester hours. If a specific UNL course equivalent has not been identified, other notations are used.
  • GNCR; course transfers as UNL general hours
  • SUBJ; course transfers as subject area hours (e.g., ENGLXXX, MATHXXX) not assigned to a specific course
  • NDAP; excess transfer course hours which are included in the equivalency and generally not degree-applicable
  • VCRD; vocational/skill development course: limited application to a UNL degree
  • HSCR; course is high school or remedial level; hours and course do not transfer
Contact your NU college to determine whether a course will be applicable to your intended major. While every effort is made to keep this list up to date, courses may be added or deleted at any time. Courses not listed may also be transferable and degree applicable. Equivalencies are date-specific and dependent upon when the course was taken. Equivalencies no longer in effect are not included in the list, but will be included in NU's evaluation of transfer credit if taken during the period the equivalency was in effect. In some cases, two or more transfer courses may be needed to achieve the equivalent of a UNL course. For an official evaluation of transfer credits, students are encouraged to apply for admission to NU, and submit complete high school and post-secondary transcripts.
