Small Farm Family Program Under-served small and limited resource farmers in Southern Missouri depend on the Small Farm Family Program (SFFP) as their primary, and often only, source of help in improving their quality of life, income level and community. Well-trained paraprofessionals in each county served by Cooperative Extension help farm cooperators turn crises into successes by offering advice on subjects ranging from cattle raising and pasture improvement to healthcare and education. In general, SFFP staff enjoy helping families express and realize their goals and objectives. More than 2000 farm families are served each year by education assistants in Southwest, South Central and Southeast Missouri. For More Information Contact: Dr. Rufus Jones

In addition, the Kids Beat Program provides educational and recreational opportunities for thousands of limited resource youths each year. The Demonstration Farm serves as an one acre teaching facility for limited resource and minority farm families seeking economic self-sufficiency. Many families have received valuable hands-on training in crop management on the farm which has helped them increase the profitability of their enterprises. For More Information, Contact: Emma Walker

Millennium Passport Is your Passport to Adventure
Passport: The word itself brings thoughts of adventure, fun and new discoveries. This summer - and for the next five years - you can have all this fun and adventure right here in Missouri if you participate in the State Park Millennium Passport Program. The state park passport program was begun in 1995 as a way to invite new visitors to Missouri state parks and historic sites and to encourage repeat visitors to explore different or lesser-known parks and sites. The program has proven to be successful even beyond original expectations with thousands of people participating. This spring, a new passport program was unveiled that has several major differences from previous programs. The new souvenir passport booklet will feature color photographs of state parks and historic sites and will include an area for participants to record their visits. So along with a full-color souvenir booklet that participants can purchase and keep, the passport will serve as a journal of their experiences. The passport booklet can be used for five years, and continuing a theme from previous programs, a full-color commemorative patch can be earned each year. Each of the years in the program will have a different theme:

HHS APPROVES MISSOURI PLAN TO INSURE MORE CHILDREN
Missouri could receive as much as $52 million in new funds for Fiscal Year 1998 under the federal CHIP program the historic, bipartisan legislation signed last year by President Clinton. The CHIP law allocates $24 billion over the next 5 years to help states expand health insurance to children whose families earn too much for traditional Medicaid, yet not enough to afford private health insurance. Missouri officials estimate the funds could insure as many as 90,000 new children by June 30, 1999. Missouri is the twelfth state to have its plan approved in the seven months since CHIP funds have been available. Together, these dozen states anticipate providing health insurance coverage for more than one million currently uninsured children within the next three years. "In just six months, this Administration has reached a significant milestone: states are telling us they plan to insure one million uninsured children, all thanks to the CHIP program. That's a remarkable achievement," Secretary Shalala said. "Many of these children come from working families, who play by the rules, but still don't earn enough to afford coverage for their kids. CHIP is bringing healthier lives to America's children, and peace of mind to America's working families."

Program Gives Hope and Help to Children With Arthritis By Rachel Young Some folks with arthritis would rather play with dolls or toy soldiers than plan their retirements. No, they're not eccentric senior citizens - it's just that some of the people who have arthritis are kids. Megan Ankeney was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at 8 months old. Yes, kids. Arthritis affects about 285,000 children in the United States, according to the Arthritis Foundation Of these 285,000 children with arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is the most common and it affects more than 70,000 children in the United States. The number of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis nearly matched the number of children with juvenile diabetes, and far outnumbers the children with cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia. Yet JRA remains largely unknown.
