A true measure of a society is the extent of its concern for those less fortunate-its intent of keeping families together, preventing abuse and neglect, and encouraging self-sufficiency and independence. In Missouri, programs dealing with these concerns are administered by the state Department of Social Services. The Department of Social Services is administrated by a director who is appointed by the Governor and approved by the state Senate. This department director, in turn, appoints the division directors. There are approximately 8,500 employees in the department largely selected from registers...some employees, however are exempted by law. The total budget for the Department is $5.3 billion. The Department of Social Services is responsible for coordinating programs to provide public assistance to children and their parents , access to health care child support enforcement assistance and to provide specialized assistance to troubled youth . While many programs give needed financial assistance and services , other units work toward reducing financial dependency of the citizens on government.

F S P Family Studies Program
Family values, poor children, and welfare reform are all hot topics in our society today. The Family Studies Program offers educational opportunities to students, human service personnel in both the public and not-for-profit sectors, as well as the general public to enhance understanding of the state of American families.
What is Family Studies? Family Studies is an interdisciplinary, academic discipline which explores the many facets of families themselves as well as societal trends such as the aging population, economic changes and public policies - to name just a few - which influence families. Sociology, psychology, history, economics, and communications studies are just a few of the disciplines which contribute to our knowledge of families. The UMKC Family Studies Program focuses primarily on the situation of American families and the social services organizations which serve them.
