Changing the Face of Education in Missouri by Monica Beglau Using technology to create classroom learning experiences that engage young learners in new ways is at the heart of the eMINTS (enhancing Missouri's Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies) program. This program is changing the face of education across the state. The goal of the program is to support Missouri educators as they integrate multimedia technology into inquiry-based, student-centered, interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching practices that result in improved student performance, increased parent involvement and enriched instructional effecti vene ss. Beginnings http://emints.more.net/evaluation/reports/mints_report.html Based on early research findings about the improved student achievement found in the Mints classrooms, eMINTS was inaugurated in 88 third and fourth grade classrooms in 44 school districts across the state in fall 1999. The eMINTS Revolution Since 1999 eMINTS classrooms have been added across the state using a combination of local, state and federal funds. MOREnet (Missouri Research and Education Network) administers eMINTS under a contract from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). MOREnet provides Internet connectivity, access to Internet2, technical support, video conferencing services and training to Missouri's K-12 schools, colleges and universities, public libraries, health care, state government and other affiliates. Fall 2001 Welcome letter: Greetings! On behalf of the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri Sports Medicine Staff, I thank you for your interest. The mission of the University of Missouri Athletic Health Services is to provide the best possible health care for all University of Missouri student-athletes. Our beautiful Dr. Glenn L. McElroy Sports Medicine Center is, without question, one of the nicest college facilities in the country. Included within the 9,000 square foot athletic medical facility is a Swim-Ex pool, a Biodex isokinetic testing and rehabilitation system, treatment and taping areas, a hydrotherapy room, and a spacious state-of-the-art rehabilitation area. The facility is staffed by six full-time certified athletic trainers, four certified graduate assistant athletic trainers, and in excess of twenty-five well-prepared student athletic trainers. The University of Missouri team physicians, under the direction of Dr. Pat Smith, are nationally renowned and respected. Dr. Smith works directly with the football program, and visits the McElroy Sports Medicine Center on a daily basis, enabling the health care team to aggressively treat any injuries that may occur-thus minimizing their severity.

DOW NASDAQ River Stage: 31.44 ARTICLE Missouri schools prepare lawsuit for funds
By Marc Powers ~ Southeast Missourian JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. A decade ago when a circuit court judge famously declared that Missouri schools ranged from the "golden" to the "god-awful," state lawmakers overhauled the system for funding public schools to ease the financial disparity between rich and poor districts. Although they achieved that goal at first, the gap between the haves and the have-nots today is greater than it was in 1993. As a result, another lawsuit is in the works to challenge the system. Gene Oakley, who as superintendent of the Greenville School District at the time played a prominent role in the earlier lawsuit, said state mandates are one reason school districts are struggling financially and considering additional legal action. "They gave us money and required new standards. Now they've taken the money away and still require the new standards," Oakley said. "Something needs to be done about that." Oakley, the Carter County presiding commissioner, is retired from education but is advising the districts preparing to sue the state.
