COOL TEACHING LESSONS AND UNITS ALONG WITH RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS Short Cuts: WEBQUEST UNITS RESEARCH MODULES ONLINE PROJECTS READY MADE UNITS ... STUDENT RESOURCES Some personal notes about this web page: It is designed as a resource for teachers K-12 who wish to find quality ready-made units and lessons for all subjects, or who wish to develop their own units. This page emphasizes engaged learning models such as WebQuests, Research Modules and Problem-Based Learning, but links include other forms of lessons and tutorials. Included also are sites to help you build your own units as well as some examples of sources to help students do research.
Some of these units depend on the ability of students to do interactive work with others using technology. However, even if you have one or no computer in your classroom, most of the units linked at this site can be of much help. They are great learning experiences not only because of technology, but because they also involve students in activities that challenge them to solve problems by doing quality research, analyzing information, synthesizing possibilities, making judgments and then creating interesting products in order to communicate their results. Technology can be used as tools in making these exciting learning experiences even deeper, richer and more motivating.
There is no glitz in this page - just links to wonderful ways for your students to learn. Enjoy!

Action Planning Session
Each state participating in the "Safe Schools Within Safe Communities" regional seminar brought a team, if possible, so that they could take the first step towards developing a violence prevention action plan for their state. While the time available for the development of the plans was brief, states were able to identify some of their key issues, goals, and objectives. The outcomes are summarized in the following section. Action Plan Teams:
Iowa
Participants:
David Wright, Iowa Department of Education
Deb Synhorst, Iowa Department of Public Health
Jan Rose, Governor's Alliance on Substance Abuse
Jim Tyson, Iowa Department of Education
Mary Sloan, Northwest Iowa Alcoholism and Drug Treatment Unit
Issue:
There is a lack of respect for human relationships by both youth and adults.
Goal:
To increase the skills and commitment for positive human relationships
Objective:
The representatives of the Prevention and Education Committee will develop an action plan for positive human relations. This committee will then present an action plan to the Governor's appointed Prevention and Education Council. Plans will be implemented in each department for compiling and listing resources, and for developing materials and providing technical assistance, as well as developing measurable outcomes. Each state department will then have an action plan that is a collaborative effort with all other departments.

"The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. Accrediting Groups Issue Recommendations for Distance-Education Programs
"Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. Missouri Caring Communities
Description An ambitious reform effort, Missouri Caring Communities (MCC), is changing how state agencies do business and how families access human services in Missouri. Seven state agencies have combined funds to support the development of Caring Communities Partnerships throughout the state. These agencies are charged with mobilizing diverse partners to improve the lives of children and families. This broad initiative, including child care and quality early care and education, is integral to achieving Missouri’s overarching vision for children: To have strong families and communities where parents work; to have children succeed in school; and to grow up healthy, safe, and prepared to enter productive adulthood. Partners Partners in Missouri Caring Communities include:
  • The Family Investment Trust (FIT), a public-private partnership created by the governor to coordinate MCC; State Departments of Corrections, Economic Development, Elementary and Secondary Education, Health, Labor and Industrial Relations, Mental Health, and Social Services; Private-sector partners such as the Annie E. Casey Foundation, The Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, Kraft Foods, The Danforth Foundation, The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, The Ewing and Marion Kauffman Foundation, the Center for the Study of Social Policy, and the Conservation Company;
