Allegations By A Former Student Lead To Charges Against Minister
Religious School Was Unregulated By The State
By Matthew Franck
Of The Post-Dispatch
For the better part of three years, the Rev. Joseph Intagliata has been transforming an abandoned religious compound into his vision of a place where wayward boys can conquer their demons and find Christ along the way. His ministry began small, with just $20 in the bank, a shoestring lease on a property nobody wanted, and an incorrigible teen-ager whose parents were at their wits' end. As of last summer, Intagliata said, his Hope Baptist Church and Boarding School was just beginning to fly. The boarding facility was enrolling eight boys at $1,100 a month. Parents, he said, were delighted with the results, and Intagliata or Pastor Joe as he is called was thinking of tripling his enrollment. But now Intagliata is facing allegations of abuse stemming from an incident involving a 16-year-old boy in August. After getting a complaint from the boy, state and local officials raided the school and removed all eight boys. In the past five months, Intagliata said, he has been barred from reopening. On Friday, Intagliata learned that he must appear in court Monday to face charges stemming from the allegations.

Parents from both coasts, with money and troubled children, descend on this town surrounded by rugged hills. Some arrive in private planes. A few rent Cadillacs and drive from Lambert Field in St. Louis. They drop off their children at Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy, a strict religious school that claims an 85 percent success rate in turning around unruly youths. It has about 200 boys and girls on its campus. Even the killing of a student last Monday didn't stop Vern Carson, of Castro Valley, Calif. He arrived Tuesday to drop off his granddaughter for a year's stay. Despite the slaying, Carson said he left her in good hands. "They were very upfront about what had happened," Carson said of the killing. "Education standards are so loose in the public schools in California. I'm hoping she gets good Christian training." Carson said he heard about the school from a friend who sent two daughters, one of whom was suicidal when she arrived. Carson said she now wants to stay and graduate. He said the $750-a-month fee includes food, board and schooling. "The whole package seemed very good," he said.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.

Sacred Heart Academy and Convent (1853 - 1960)
The Sisters from the Society of the Sacred Heart who established Sacred Heart Academy and Convent in St. Joseph, Missouri, were from a religious order which was founded in France after the French revolution. They had come to St. Louis, Missouri, under the leadership of Mother Duchesne not many years before they arrived in St. Joseph. Many of the Sisters spoke French as their native language, and the Annual Letters and House Journals of the Convent were written in French for the first third of the St. Joseph Convent's existence. Most of the customs regarding the education of young women were transferred from French circumstances to the American frontier in St. Joseph. The St. Joseph Academy and Convent moved to its permanent location at Twelfth and Messanie streets, in 1856. Soon, young women came from the Rocky Mountains, Illinois, kentucky, Nebraska, and even as far away as Louisiana and Texas, arriving by stagecoach, by steamboat, and by covered wagon to share in the culture that an emigrant Old World order had brought to an American frontier town.(119) Protestant women usually outnumbered Catholics at the boarding school, but both followed the same schedule and studied the same subjects. Those enrolled at the Academy during its first half-century of existence, followed a schedule like this, except for Sundays and holidays:

Ask A Student About Westover
MARKEY
Senior boarding student from Missouri
WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A BOARDING STUDENT AT WESTOVER?
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WESTOVER AS YOUR HIGH SCHOOL?
WHAT COURSES ARE YOU TAKING THIS YEAR?
English IV, and an English elective called Medieval Quests, Calculus, AP US History, AP Physics, and Spanish II. During the fall term of this year I am taking The Zone System, a photo elective. In the winter term I will take Meteorology, a science elective and in the spring I will take We Shall Overcome, a history elective as well as Color Photo. I have a pretty full schedule this year, but it's not bad and I enjoy most of my classes!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COURSE THIS YEAR AND WHY?
My favorite course this year is AP US History; history seems to be my strong point, and though this class is pretty tough, I really enjoy learning about decades and decades of American history.
WHAT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE YOU INVOLVED IN?
I also play varsity soccer, varsity volleyball, and varsity softball. I love sports and we have either practice or games every day but Sunday. Last year our varsity teams had very good records, and this year will be even better!
Socially, there is a dance every Saturday at either Westover or another all-girls or all-boys school in the area. There are about 7 schools involved in the dances, and a different school hosts a dance each weekend. On Friday nights, there are shuttles to the local mall, where you can go out to dinner, shop or take in a movie. On Sundays there are ski trips, shuttles to other malls further from Westover, or you can make plans to go to a show with your friends. My personal favorite is going to the dances. It's fun getting ready for them, and then dancing with friends from other schools once you're there. The fun continues after you return to school from the dance. Often we watch a movie or two. We have fun on weekends!

Lewis and Clark replica keelboat on the Missouri Lewis and Clark project asks kids to look at history and math questions How did Meriwether Lewis and William Clark transport the lead shot and black powder they'd need on their Missouri River expedition 200 years ago? What did the frontier area north and west of St. Louis look like in the early 1800s? Who lived there? How does that same area look today? Who lives there now? The University of Missouri-St. Louis' College of Education has designed a history project that asks kids to help find answers to these and other questions. It's all part of a Corps of ReDiscovery program now taking shape. Schools all along the original Lewis and Clark Expedition route are invited to take part. That includes schools in the St. Louis metro area as well as all along the Missouri River.

Headmaster holds door open to health and education for Vietnam’s ethnic minorities
Mr. Bach Cong Tien, Vice Chairman, People’s Committee of Ba Vi District Photo: Joanne Fairley/CWS By Thomas Abraham "This is Mr. Tien. He’s an ethnic minority member." That’s how the former Vietnamese headmaster was introduced to Church World Service’s representative in Vietnam, Joanne Fairley. It’s hardly the first thing you’re told when meeting someone, but Tien’s minority status is significant for several reasons. Improving services for ethnic minorities has been a CWS goal since 1990. Before that, the organization had already contributed over $8 million to the country’s post-war reconstruction, after resettling over 80,000 Vietnamese refugees. More than a third of CWS Vietnam’s $1.4 million budget for the next three years — funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — is aimed at educational support for ethnic minority students. Ethnic minorities make up 20 percent of Vietnam’s 77 million people. They speak more than a dozen distinct languages and many dialects. Eleven groups have their own writing systems. Although animistic beliefs are common, a large number are Catholics or Protestants, while the Khmer practice Buddhism and the Cham are Hindu or Muslim. Seventy five percent of Vietnam’s people live below the poverty line, enduring poor educational and social services. Many have been uprooted from ancestral lands in the government’s effort to reunify the country after 1976 and develop agriculture for export.
