This report summarizes information about public elementary and secondary schools and local education agencies in the United States during the 1999-2000 school year. The information is provided by state education agencies through the Common Core of Data (CCD) survey system.
Types of Public Schools and Agencies States reported over 92,000 public elementary/secondary schools in the 1999-2000 school year . This was an increase of almost 7 percent over the more than 86,000 schools reported 5 years earlier, in the fall of 1994 . Most of these were regular schools, those that offer a comprehensive curriculum and may provide other programs and services as well. A smaller number of schools focused primarily on special education, vocational/technical education, or alternative programs. Students in these specialized schools were often enrolled in a regular school as well, and reported with the membership of that regular school ( table A ). (See Key Terms for more information about school types.)

Mississippi's commitment to education is historic, constantly upgrading the skills of teachers, familiarizing them with the latest national teaching techniques and trends, and maintaining competitive salary levels to keep some of the nation's finest educators in Mississippi.
The state set impressive national examples by introducing the first state-supported school for the handicapped, the first state college for women, the first coeducational college to grant degrees to women, and the oldest land-grant college for black Americans.
Responding in 1987 to a national concern about mathematics and science, the Mississippi Legislature established the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science . MSMS, the nation's fourth oldest school of its kind, is a residential high school for academically able students, and offers a college preparatory curriculum which emphasizes instruction in mathematics and science. In addition, courses in the humanities, computer technology, foreign languages, music, and art are offered to allow students to participate in a well rounded curriculum

http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/south/ms_encyclopedia/mvsusample.htm
Mississippi Valley State University A historically black institution of higher education, Mississippi Valley State University was opened in 1950 as Mississippi’s eighth and final public university. Valley can trace its genesis back to 1943 when the Delta Council recommended that the Delta was in “need for expanding its program in the study of race…relations and the maintenance of harmonious understanding between the two races of the Delta.” Consequently, in 1946 the Mississippi Legislature authorized the creation of an institution in the Delta that would “train teachers for the rural and elementary schools and to provide vocational education.” With the small Leflore County town of Itta Bena and Dr. J.H. White respectively selected as Valley’s future site and first president, what was initially designated as Mississippi Vocational College had its formal groundbreaking on February 19, 1950. While the campus was initially envisioned as beginning with forty buildings, two barns, and a stadium, Valley’s first classes had to be conducted at the old Leflore County High School building in Itta Bena. The first class consisted of just fourteen regular students and seven faculty members. Established specifically to offer mainly courses in education and vocational training, in 1953, nine of Valley’s first twelve graduating students had degrees in elementary education. At the same time, most of those early Valley students who completed their course of instruction in vocational terminal programs received certificates of completion in the field of agriculture. Nevertheless, by the 1960’s, Valley was expanding its academic courses into such areas as liberal arts, nursing, and business administration.

Texas State Technical College

The Texas State Technical College System was created in 1965 by the 59th Texas State Legislature as the James Connally Technical Institute. Located on an abandoned Air Force Base in Waco, Texas, it was originally created to meet the changing workforce needs of business and industry. One year later, JCTI began offering hands-on training in metrology, chemical technology, and industrial design and drafting. In 1967, a second campus site was approved in Harlingen for the South Texas region. Over the course of twenty years, seven new campuses were created in Amarillo (1968), Sweetwater (1968), McAllen (1983), Abilene (1985), Breckenridge (1989), Brownwood (1991), and Marshall (1991). In 1991, Texas State Technical Institute was officially recognized as an institution of higher education and its name was changed to Texas State Technical College.
Currently Texas State Technical College System has eight locations (TSTC Amarillo merged with Amarillo College in 1995).
The Texas State Technical College System:
  • Offers more than seventy associates degrees in fields ranging from chemical technology to industrial maintenance mechanics
  • Provides assistance to new and existing businesses in the form of assessment of employee training needs and customized training programs.
