    Basic Camp
Basic Camp will challenge you to lead your fellow students.
Basic Camp (Camp Challenge) is a fully-paid five-week summer internship at Fort Knox, KY which is normally attended by cadets between the sophomore and junior years of college. Students receive approximately $700 for the training. Room, board, and travel is provided by the Army. The objective of Camp Challenge to advise students in career opportunities for ROTC graduates; and to introduce the military as a profession.
This is where you'll learn basic military skills through hands-on practice and acquire knowledge other cadets may have gained through two years of on-campus ROTC. It is designed to prepare cadets for the ROTC Advanced Course and is a challenging and exciting opportunity. Camp Challenge graduates are fully eligible for enrollment in the advanced program upon returning to college in the fall. Attendance at Camp Challenge incurs no obligation to enter the Army or the ROTC program upon return to campus. In other words, you can try the program out before making a decision!
You may attend Basic Camp if you
Have not completed all four semesters of Military Science I and II.

March 21, 2004 'Catcalls' take on new note in Senate debate
    By Julie Goodman

    jgoodman@clarionledger.com
During some recent floor action in the Senate, lawmakers took up a bill addressing penalties for animal cruelty. When the title of the bill was read, one lawmaker's immediate response was a little outside the professional norm. "Meow," one of them said from the back of the chamber, prompting giggles from fellow legislators. It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the high-pitched noise, but it did seem to come from the direction of Sen. Billy Hewes, R-Gulfport.

    http://www.nospank.net/msgulag.htm
A MISSISSIPPI GULAG U.S. Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd's report on the youth training schools in Raymond and Columbia Mississippi evokes images of prisoner-of-war camps at their worst, but with this distinction: sadistic POW camp guards don't misrepresent themselves as agents of rehabilitation. In that setting, the rules of the game are clear to all parties: the torturers and the tortured know exactly where they stand. To the reader who thinks I am overstating the case, I ask you to withhold judgement until you have read Boyd's report. Boyd describes a system out of control. He describes acts that even the most credulous observer could not deem rehabilitative, let alone safe. If those same acts were perpetrated against adults, prosecutions and convictions would surely result. And woe to any teenager who subjects an adult to even a small fraction of what the kids at these facilities endure daily. Because the victims are adjudicated juveniles, they are apparently disqualified for the normal protections of civilized society. Don't be misled by those who will tell you that the two Mississippi training schools are anomalies. They are standard. They are emblematic of the break-'em-down-build-'em-up theory of youth rehabilitation which every true educator knows is neither educational nor therapeutic. It's obedience training and brainwashing. These facilities were just as rotten last year when nobody was looking, and they are no worse than many other similar institutions elsewhere.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.

This is a generalized version of the form we use for mid-year and annual performance evaluation.
Starting this winter season we have a new coaching staffwith THREE new coaches!
    Pics and biographies are below....
    Head Coach Randy Simon ; ph: 228-388-6860, e-mail: surfswimming@earthlink.net
Age Group Coach Tanja Webber ; ph: 228-539-2430
    Assistant Coach Suzzanne Rucker
Randy S. Simon Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Randy started competitive swimming at the age of 6 for a city-league team. At 10, he started swimming for the Greater Columbus Swim Team (GCST) under Coach John Bruce. At ages 16 and17, and now under Coach Steve Nye, Randy made Region 6 qualifying times (the forerunner of Sectionals) and Nationals in 1983 and 1984. Not content to just spend his weekends at swim meets, Randy started diving competitively at age 14 under 1976 Olympic Bronze Medal winner Debbie Kepler-Wilson.
After graduating from High School Randy joined the U.S. Marines and also started coaching the following year. From an Assistant Coach for his old High School team he soon moved on to what he feels has been his biggest challenge as a coach, the Buckeye Wheeler Swim Team. This adapted (also called "disabled") aquatics team forced Randy to view swimming competitively in a whole new light and remains one of his most rewarding coaching experiences. While working with the team, Randy coached Beth Staumbaugh to two world records in the 100m I.M. and the 50m Butterfly.
