Louisiana Newspaper Project Scope of Collection and Collecting Areas Political Papers Donor Information ... Tips on Finding Manscript Resources Introduction to LLMVC Manuscripts The Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections (LLMVC) documents the history and culture of this region. The largest accumulation of materials on Louisiana and the lower Mississippi Valley in existence, LLMVC includes a comprehensive collection of books, periodicals, maps, prints, pamphlets, Louisiana state documents, and microfilm of Louisiana newspapers What is now the manuscript component of the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections was initiated in 1935 when LSU history professor Edwin Davis began systematically to collect the papers of the families that settled and prospered in the lower Mississippi Valley. Recognizing the role of the Mississippi River as the shaper of the land it drains from the contours of the land to the culture, economy, and politics of the communities that draw sustenance from it Davis endeavored to document and preserve the rich history and culture of the region. In 1985, these manuscript collections combined with the Louisiana Collection of books, periodicals, and maps to become the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections.
Scope of Collection complete findings aids In addition to its rich manuscript collections, LLMVC includes more than 120,000 volumes of books, periodicals, maps, newspapers, and other published material. Complementing these textual materials are more than 200,000 historic photographs.

Mississippi Library Association Statement on Internet Filtering
The Mississippi Library Association supports the principle of free and unrestricted access to information and ideas, regardless of the medium in which they exist. The Association therefore endorses the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and Resolution on the Use of Filtering Software in Libraries. The Association supports the right of individuals to determine which resources are appropriate for themselves and respects the responsibility of parents/legal guardians to guide their own children's use of the library and its resources and services. The Mississippi Library Association recognizes the issues and concerns generated from providing access to the Internet. While the use of Internet filters has been suggested, such use poses ethical and legal problems for libraries. Because of their inherent imperfections, filters are indiscriminate and can block valuable information, thus preventing the library from fulfilling one of its most basic missions. In addition, filters may prove unconstitutional in public institutions, since much of the information they block is constitutionally protected speech. The Mississippi Library Association cannot recommend the use of Internet filters in libraries and opposes attempts by federal and/or state governments to mandate their use. The Association suggests that decisions regarding the use of Internet filters should remain with local boards.

    BEATRICE SAWYER ROSSELL
Editor. Bulletin of the American Library Association
  • Placing a county librarian in every county and two in some of the larger ones was the proposed first step. By approving the plan, the Women's Division of the Emergency Relief Administration, under the direction of Ethel Payne, gave Mississippi the distinction of being the first state to provide geographically equalized library service. Carrying out a survey with the assistance of nearly 500 CWA workers was the next step; attempting to meet the needs it disclosed, the third. Each step has had the cordial support of the State Board of Public Welfare.
  • To observe this unique experiment first hand I recently visited Mississippi and saw the work of a dozen or more county librarians. While many in charge of county service have been on the relief rolls or would be there except for this work, their qualifications for the job have been considered.
  • Making something out of nothing by dint of courage, intelligence and resourcefulness is the record especially of Sunflower, Leflore and Hancock counties. When two county librarians went to work in Sunflower County last June not a library book was available for its 66,000 residents. A county headquarters has been leased from the board of supervisors for five years and today thirteen reading rooms and eighty-five deposit stations are being visited regularly, and 3000 volumes have been begged, borrowed or bought. Like most gift collections, the books include many which few, if any, libraries would purchase. However they also include
