Associations and Organizations
A parent is the legally recognized father or mother of a person. In its narrowest sense and under the old common law, parents are biological mothers and fathers. In most American jurisdictions, however, people who adopt children are also considered to be parents. Parents have the right of custody of their minor children, and they have the privilege of applying their earnings and services to the household. Legal custody also entails the right to punish the child. Under many state statutes, destitute parents are entitled to support from their children.
