INTRODUCTION
From "A Nation at Risk" to "No Child Left Behind", efforts to improve K-12 education have increasingly recognized that improvement requires reform of a host of interconnected systems that make up education as we know it. "School reform" still means many things to many people, but there is widespread agreement that it must be more than just "tinkering around the edges."
PROJECTS
All of our projects share in common a clear focus on applied research and technical assistance that reflects equity and diversity issues within schools. Projects relating to this topic are listed here. For a state-by-state listing of projects, see Where We Work
Breaking Ranks Study [detail]
The LAB will conduct a study that systematically investigates how the implementation of the Breaking Ranks framework supports effective high school reform and improved teaching and learning in urban low-performing schools. Through this study, the conditions and strategies necessary for achieving and sustaining positive change and improvement in low-performing schools will be documented, and resultant effects on student learning and achievement for diverse student populations will be documented. This research activity will be conducted by staff of the LAB and Center for Resource Management (CRM) in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the NASSP state affiliates in this region, the Providence, RI school district, the Yonkers, NY school district, and the Malden, MA school district.

Based in Washington, D.C., and founded in January 1995 by Jack Jennings, the Center on Education Policy is the national independent advocate for public education and for more effective public schools. The Center works to help Americans better understand the role of public education in a democracy and the need to improve the academic quality of public schools. We do not represent any special interests. Instead, we help citizens make sense of the conflicting opinions and perceptions about public education and create the conditions that will lead to better public schools. The Center on Education Policy receives nearly all of its funding from charitable foundations. We are grateful to The Joyce Foundation and The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for their support of our work on the No Child Left Behind Act. The Atlantic Philanthropies, The George Gund Foundation, and Phi Delta Kappa International also provide the Center with general support funding that assisted us in this endeavor. US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...
