Ms. Banerjee employs a variety of effective techniques in her classroom, including standardized assessment for placement and curricular purposes and implementation of behavior modification and social skills programs. She also utilizes ongoing formal and informal assessments that allow her to create detailed portfolios to show student progress that may not be evident in quantitative data alone.
Ms. Banerjee obtained her Bachelor's degree from the University of Delhi in Indi and received her Master's degree from Boston University, where she was awarded a full merit scholarship.
One of the programs developed by Ms. Fisher is her Peer Mentoring program, where non-disabled students sign up to mentor students in her classroom. This program allows students with disabilities a chance to interact with non-disabled peers and have their friends help them with their work instead of a teacher. It also allows the non-disabled peers insight into the lives of people with disabilities.
Ms. Fisher received her Bachelor of Science in Special Education in 1986 from Illinois State University. She has received numerous awards for her exceptional abilities as a teacher of children with disabilities, including "Women of Achievement Award in Education" from the YMCA and Glenbrook North's Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award.

    and Answer Section.
INTRODUCTION TO TOPSOCCER TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement for young athletes with disabilities, organized by Mississippi Youth Soccer Association Volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, AGE 4-19, who has a mental or physical disability. Our goal is to enable the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the MYSA/US YOUTH SOCCER family. Why do we need a TOPSoccer Program? TopSoccer was formed to perpetuate the US YOUTH SOCCER mission statement, which is, in part, "to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition."

FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN PELOTAS, SOUTHERN BRAZIL Silvia C. Halpern, Ricardo Halpern,
Rune J. Simeonsson, Bernardo L. Horta SUMMARY Several studies have described what happens to a family that has a child with special needs; however, little is known about this issue in developing countries. In Brazil, there is a lack of a systematic research on children with disabilities and their families. This study describes the sociodemographic characteristics of a sample of 49 families of children with disabilities enrolled in special schools in Pelotas, Southern Brazil. Family needs were explored through the Family Needs Survey (FNS). The results indicated that comparisons between findings on the FNS in the United States and Pelotas, reaffirm the idea that some family needs are universal. The present study raised some important questions about differences and similarities of the FNS in both countries. Limitations of this study along with suggestions for future research are discussed.
Introduction Despite the evolutionary process of integration and normalization that was initiated in the late 1960s, developing countries seemed unprepared to adopt rehabilitative measures. According to Thorburn and Marfo (1990), the major difficulties and barriers that children with disabilities and their families have to face are not only technological but also societal, including attitudes about rights; misconceptions about causes and the problem itself; the potential of disabled people; and the availability of services. In addition, the implementation and planning of services in developing countries is a challenge because i) there are no clear responsibilities by any agency or department, ii) there are no clear goals and objectives in providing services, and iii) there is a lack of an epidemiology of needs (Sell 1984; Simeonsson 1991).

Improving Oral Health for People With Special Needs Through Community-Based Dental Care Delivery Systems
A program for helping special-needs patients in rural areas is discussed. By Paul Glassman, DDS, MA, and
Christine Ernst Miller, RDH, MHS, MA
A community-based dental care delivery system is described. This system has been used in a number of communities in California to improve oral health for people with special needs. It includes oral health assessment, coalition building, development and networking of local resources, training of dental professionals, and utilization of preventive dentistry training materials. Also discussed are challenges of the future that will need to be met to continue to make oral health a priority and reality for people with special needs in California. Journal of the California Dental Association
In California, inadequate access to medical and dental care for people with special needs remains a significant problem. In this context, "special needs" refers to medical, social, psychological, or physical conditions that make it necessary to modify the normal course of dental treatment. Examples of such conditions include medical and developmental disabilities; problems associated with aging; and psychological problems, including dental phobia. Individuals with such conditions have been termed "special patients."1
In studies of special patients, such as people with developmental disabilities residing in community settings, it has been reported that these individuals have significant unmet medical needs in general,2-6 as well as significant unmet dental needs.7-11 These findings are even worse for individuals with disabilities who are living in rural areas of our country,12 and conditions are further complicated by the increasing trend to move individuals with severe disabilities out of institutions. Many individuals have been moved into community living situations with inadequate arrangements for medical and dental services.4-6

Home Children's Miracle Network Children's Rehabilitation Center Friends of Children's Hospital ... Donate now! It Happens Every Day Children are struck down by illness and injury. It may begin with a simple cough or an accident. And often it strikes with sudden, unrelenting violence. Thousands of Mississippi children and their families must deal with this reality each year. At the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children, staff members work hard to overcome these obstacles. They cannot do it alone. It takes support from the community to keep the hospital on the cutting edge of contemporary health care. With the community's help, 1997 was a banner year for Mississippi's children. It was then the doors to the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children opened to begin offering state-of -the-art health care in a state-of-the-art facility. While the original Children's Hospital opened in 1968 and more than 40 pediatric specialists were on staff providing care only available at UMC, the environment and facilities were not ready for 21st century medicine. To meet that need, the new $17 million five-floor Batson Hospital was built atop the Mississippi Children's Cancer Clinic. It has prioritized children's care and placed new emphasis on the special needs of hospitalized children. Included in the 130- bed facility are areas for physical therapy, infant care, treatment rooms, bone marrow transplantation, a pediatric pharmacy, the state's only pediatric intensive care unit as well as patient classrooms and activity rooms.
