ABC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by a teacher, Dee Kotinas, and her junior high school high risk students in January 1978 as a model no-kill animal shelter. ABC has extended to include therapy pet activities, teaching animals to help people, including high-risk teens, and community and service dog training programs. The ABC Delta Pet Partners Program began in February 2000 to fulfill ABC's mission of providing a community service program mutually beneficial to both people and animals. ABC recognizes that human values can be taught through the love, respect and care of animals. ABC's only source of income is through public donations, bequests and grants. Contact ABC to find out how you and your companion animal can be trained to safely and effectively visit nursing homes, hospitals and special needs schools.

Software - Focus on Special Needs
by Elizabeth Amberg
February 2000 - Software/Courseware
Students with disabilities or special needs often have special challenges in a standard classroom setting. Many products and software applications are emerging to help such students learn, develop skills, and explore the Internet. From programs that translate the Internet into Braille, to programs that help children learn to navigate their wheelchairs, educators will find products to suit almost any special education need. With a little help, students with attention difficulties can learn to concentrate in school. Play Attention is a school-based system that combines tested teaching methods and proven technology to help students improve attention skills and reduce behavior problems. It is specifically designed for teacher use, and gives educators detailed reports on student progress. The system hooks up to a PC, and features a helmet with sensors that measure the brain waves associated with focus and cognitive processing. An interface unit translates the brain waves, so students can control objects on a computer screen through attention alone. With coaching, students learn to maintain focused awareness, and grow to recognize what behaviors detract from it. Gradually, students learn to apply their powers of concentration to reading and attentive listening in class. The system has five levels, each focusing on a different educational objective, such as increased time on-task, short-term memory sequencing, and discriminatory processing. Play Attention aims to help students understand and control both positive and negative habits, offering immediate feedback and reinforcing positive behaviors. The system’s attention-training techniques are similar to those developed by NASA and the Air Force.

Fathering Special Needs Children
"The most important...work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes." Harold B. Lee
After reading stories and ideas in this section, please take about one minute and give us your evaluation on five feedback questions at the bottom of the page When fathers learn that their child will have lifelong special needs or that they have a dangerous illness, their reactions can range from shock, to acceptance, to greater love. Fathers often try and meet these challenges with courage and ingenuity. Many fathers are highly commited to their special needs children and devote long hours to the physical and emotional care of their children . While there is relatively little research on fathers with special needs children, in most cases, whatever the nature of the child's handicap, there is a much greater likelihood that the children with attentive, encouraging fathers will eventually make successful adjustments, cope constructively, and develop healthy self-esteem than children who suffer from lack of paternal support (Biller, 1993, p. 216)

ADVOCATING IN SCHOOLS FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES: WHAT'S NEW WITH IDEA
S.J. Altshuler and S. Kopels Social Work, vol.48, 2003, p.320-329 The US Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was amended in 1997 and its regulatory provisions came into force in October 1999. Article provides information about the requirements of the law and the impact of the changes on the educational rights of disabled children. Changes discussed include:
  • expansion of categories of children with disabilities; new requirements for mobile, homeless or culturally diverse populations and participants in the individualised education programme process; payment for private school placements for disabled children; provision of social work services in the schools.
DISPARITIES IN EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND OUTCOMES: WHAT DO WE KNOW AND WHAT CAN WE DO?
G. Maruyama Journal of Social Issues, vol. 59, 2003, p.653-676 In a US context, article examines disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes based on ethnicity and poverty. It illustrates ways in which social scientists can be involved in shaping educational practices and policies, focusing on the types of skills that are useful and ways of thinking about the types of collaboration that are needed. Skills discussed are methodological as well as substantive. For collaboration, the model described is that of action research. Approaches are illustrated with personal examples drawn from collaborations with urban state schools.
