This will be an abbreviated version of Echoes, due to Extension Forum being held next week. On Tuesday of Forum we will provide an administrative update. During that update, we will hear from President Larry Penley, Provost Peter Nicholls, and Vice Provost/Dean Marc Johnson. Because we are consolidating regular Forum activities and In-Service training into one week, we will not have a separate In-Service in February. I hope that all of you are making plans to join us for this important Extension event next week! I will look forward to the regular Echoes communication with you next month. Go to top of this page.

Career Opportunities for Majors in Plant Science
Introduction
A bachelor's degree is sufficient for advanced technician jobs in the medical field, lab research assistant positions, or testing and inspection jobs. An advanced degree is required for most other positions in the scientific field. While most plant science graduates work in related occupations and eventually obtain advanced degrees, others choose different directions. Many careers do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability to employers through internships, responsible work experience, good grades, and involvement in college activities.

While there is a large volume of meterological information available on the Internet, it represents only a small percentage of the actual total. The majority of meteorological information resides in public and university libraries. The Internet is no substitute for a good library. Although it is tedious and time consuming, proper library research is necessary for any project. Governments documents contain a wealth of weather data. Librarians can provide assistance and suggstions in finding resources. Most major libraries have inter-library loan agreements with other institutions.

The voluntary FarmASyst program contains 24 publications and worksheets that can be used by farmers to identify drinking water contamination risks. Interagency involvement in the development of these materials is necessary to insure their technical and policy accuracy. This interagency cooperation is also necessary for effective training and implementation programs. Wisconsin pilot FarmASyst implementation programs are being implemented in two USDA projects, two EPA pollution prevention projects, a Rural Clean Water Project and three State Watershed projects. Resulting refinements in farmstead management are reducing agricultural impacts on both surface and groundwater while maintaining or enhancing farm profitability.
