SUFFER THE MISSING CHILDREN? Taxpayer dollars continue to disappear while children don't. By Tadd Wilson On April 18, 1993, Attorney General Janet Reno approved the ill-fated federal raid in Waco, Texas, apparently because an unidentified FBI agent told her that "the Branch Davidians were beating babies," Reno said. More than 80 people, including 22 children, were killed during the raid. Two years later, Reno wants to help the children again, this time by forming a new federal task force to "coordinate the delivery of federal services to missing children and their families." Those services include a national hotline, FBI investigations, searches conducted by U.S. Marshals and Customs officers, and parcel inspection by the U.S. Postal Service. The task force is composed of administrators from the FBI, the DEA, the Secret Service, the Customs Service, Health and Human Services, and the Defense Department, as well as several Justice Department offices. The vice president of National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), co-host of the attorney general's announcement, will also sit on the task force. While any effort on the part of government to improve performance and allocate resources more efficiently must be applauded, the figures used to justify the extension of the federal government's reach in law enforcement are questionable at best. The Department of Justice estimates that "440,000 children are lost or otherwise missing each year, including children abducted by a stranger or acquaintance; children abducted by a parent or family member; and children who are abandonedthrown awayor told to leave home." It also says that "450,000 children and young people run away from home every year." However, the attorney general's figures describe an epi demic that doesn't exist.

Mann Marilyn became involved with the Oregon Child Custody Protection Association (OCCPA) in 1982. She was on the Board of Directors first, then Chairperson of the Board. The OCCPA is an organization that looks into the Legislation and Bills that deal with Children's Rights issues. In 1983 Marilyn became President of the organization to free up time for the founder, Walt Underwood, to continue his search for his two missing daughters (who were kidnapped by their non-custodial mother in 1979). Walt's daughters were found in Texas, May 1st, 1997, after 18 years. Marilyn became interested in Legislation and Children's Rights issues after being involved with in-field investigations with Stephen Jenkevice, while running National Missing Children's Locate Center, Inc. (the only Missing Children's organization in Oregon at this time and to date). In October 1983 Marilyn was elected as the President of the National Missing Children's Locate Center, Inc. (NMCLC). Marilyn ran this organization out of her apartment in Gresham, Oregon between 1984 and 1986. In 1986 the use of a large building was donated to the organization and Marilyn and Stephen Jenkevice Jr. ran both the NMCLC and the OCCPA from this location until 1989 when the building was sold.

Abduction Prevention Archived Articles If you have reason to believe your child may be missing, then a definite plan of action must be taken immediately. Don't waste any time. If you think your child may be at a friends house, then call that number. If your child is not there, then follow this emergency missing child action plan. FIRST: Call 911 and tell the person who answers the phone that you are reporting a possible missing child. Tell him or her that this is a high priority police emergency. He or she will start asking you some questions. Try to remain calm and answer the questions as completely as possible. The operator will be relaying this information to the officers on the street even while you're talking, so action will already be under way. SECOND: When you hang up with the police, immediately call the nearest missing children organization in your area. This is not a time to be searching for phone numbers . You should already have this number written down in a safe place. The people who staff these organizations will know exactly what to do and will jump into action immediately. THIRD: Contact the Center for Missing and Exploited Children . This is a clearing house for missing children and they have the ability to get the word out about your child coast to coast. Their number is 1(800) THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678). This number should also be written down and kept in a safe place. The national center can also put you in touch with a local missing children organization in your area.

Psychics and Missing Children in Belgium
Tim Trachet Belgium has been shaken in the last several months by a series of tragic disappearances of children. Since August 1996, five young girls who had been missing were found dead, victims of sex crimes. The police are still searching for at least half a dozen other children who may also be victims of sexual abuse. In February the Belgian government confirmed that for this case "paranormal" leads are being examined by the police. The Disaster Victim Identification Team of the Belgian Gendarmerie has received the order to collect all tips coming from psychics.
