Subsequent discoveries, however, have made it clear that Mycenae was not its chief centre in its earlier stages, or, perhaps, at any period; and, accordingly, it is more usual now to adopt a wider geographical title." The term “ancient Greece” refers to both where Greeks lived and how they lived long ago. Geographically, it indicates the heartland of Greek communities on the north coast and nearby islands of the Mediterranean Sea. Culturally, it refers to the ways ancient Greeks spoke, worshiped, understood the nature of the physical world, organized their governments, made their livings, entertained themselves, and related to others who were not Greek.

Mycenaean Miletus was a dependency or ally of Ahhiwaya (Achaea) though its population was mostly Carian. Shortly after 1300 BCE the settlement was destroyed by fire probably at the instigation of the Hittites who knew the city as Millawanda. The Hittites fortified the city against possible naval attacks by the Greeks. Miletus was regarded as the oldest of the Ionian settlements, though this claim was disputed by Ephesus. Unlike its near neighbors, Ephesus and Smyrna, Miletus was protected from landward assaults by a mountain range and developed early as a sea power. During the 6th century Miletus contested (unsuccessfully) with Samos for possession of Priene. In addition to producing philosophers and historians, the city was famous for its purple dye, its furniture, and the quality of its wool. The Milesians made their own terms with Cyrus during his conquest of Ionia, though they joined in the rebellion of 499. The city did not fall to the Persians until 494 at which time the Ionian Revolt was considered to be well and truly over.

It is hard to describe the very beginning of first civilizations (and first states) because we not have so many written documents that could help us. Of course some clues we could find analyzing the most advanced cultures North American Indian, early African states (that was sometimes described by European voyagers and trader) or history of Medieval Ireland, but you should remember that any construction we build will be mostly based on guesses. So, I will not try to precisely describe the reasons for uprising of early countries. According to models presented here, the very first states emerges with

The Curse of Ham: Capsule of Ancient History
by Robert Brow (web site - www.brow.on.ca) This article originally appeared in Christianity Today [October 26, 1973], pp. 8-10.
(This article offered a model to explain the Table of Nations in Genesis 10. At the time it was published there were still some who used the curse of Ham as an argument for apartheid. It is included in this Model Theology web site to illustrate the importance of working at the model which the biblical writers may have had in mind when they first wrote. It would be wise to do this before we jump into explanations based on totally different historical assumptions.) "Cursed by Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers. Blessed by the LORD my God be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave. God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave" ( Genesis 9:25-27 That the curse of Ham cannot be applied to black people is easily shown from the text itself. What is usually missed is the astonishing unfolding of world history that the words of this oracle refer to. To interpret the oracle we will need to understand the logic of the Table of Nations given in Genesis 10 which is the next chapter. Scholars have generally assumed that this outline of racial origins is ignorant guesswork based on the geographical locations of the peoples that surrounded Israel many centuries after Abraham.

    Reports of Minos and Knossos
[Prof Arkenberg writes] Here are two texts on the Minoans. Of course, these have always been suspect. However, recent archaeological finds have begun to show the kernel of truth in both the tale of Theseosand the child sacrifice that occurred in the Labyrinthand Herodotus' accounts of the two depopulations of Crete do seem to have a basis in fact. Of course, Herodotus doesn't mention the Thera explosion, but famine and pestilence which would undoubtedly have accompanied that blast appears to have remained in Greek memory.
Plutarch, The Life of Theseus Theseos, who, thinking it but right to partake of the sufferings of his fellow-citizens, offered himself for one without any lot....When he arrived at Crete, as most of the ancient historians as well as poets tell us, having a clue of thread given him by Ariadne, who had fallen in love with him, and being instructed by her how to use it so as to conduct him through the windings of the labyrinth, he escaped out of it and slew the Minotaur, and sailed back, taking along with him the Athenian captives....

ANCIENT APOCALYPSE: MYSTERY OF THE MINOANS.
    Program Synopsis
Minoan Crete has recently become an enigma. The long held orthodoxy of a peaceful aesthetically minded society has been challenged by gruesome discoveries at Knossos and Amenosopilia. The explanation of this apparent conflict in the historical record may be found in the research of vulcanologists, geologists and climatologists. The archaeological investigations and problem solving displayed in this program are a showcase of the ways in which Science, Archaeology and History supplement and complement each other. The senior student of Archaeology or of Minoan History will find this material very useful, challenging and rewarding. Some younger students may struggle with the scientific evidence and theories used in the investigation.
    Staying Focused
This is the data collection stage of the activity.
The detailed questioning is designed to ensure that students decode the visual and aural materials presented to them in the video.
The video programs can be stopped at the end of each section. This will allow students to share and discuss answers.
