Minoan civilization
The Minoans were an ancient civilisation on what is now Crete (in the Mediterranean ), during the Bronze Age , prior to classical Greek culture . The Minoans were primarily a mercantilist people engaged in overseas trade. Many historians and archaeologists believe that the Minoans were highly involved in the Bronze Age 's important tin trade (tin being used for manufacture of bronze ). The decline of Minoan civilization and the decline in use of bronze tools seem to be correlated.

The civilization is named after King Minos , who in Greek mythology was said to be the King of Crete. Some believe that Minos either figuratively represents the civilization or is a dynastic name. Major cities of Minoan culture were Knossos Phaistos , and Malia . The Cretan myths and the discoveries of Heinrich Schliemann encouraged the excavations carried out in , when Sir Arthur Evans started excavations on the palace in Knossos . His methods caused some controversy, because he not only excavated but attempted to reconstruct the buildings.

The Fall of the Minoan Civilisation
By Jessica Cecil The burning light of a magnificent civilisation, which awed the ancient Greeks, dimmed and then suddenly disappeared. Discover Dr Floyd McCoy's theory of the Minoan collapse. Page 1 of 4 1. Volcanic explosion 2. Tsunami destruction 3. Cycle of disaster 4. Find out more ... Print entire article Volcanic explosion Three and a half thousand years ago, the tiny Aegean island of Thera was devastated by one of the worst natural disasters since the Ice Age - a huge volcanic eruption. This cataclysm happened 100km from the island of Crete, the home of the thriving Minoan civilisation. Fifty years after the eruption, that civilisation was in ruins. Did the volcano deliver a death blow to the Minoans? It's a whodunnit that has haunted historians and scientists for decades. The lost world of the Minoans has intrigued people for thousands of years. Their palace at Knossos was vast and elaborate, with Europe's first paved roads and running water. The ancient Greeks wove its magnificence into their myths; it was the home of King Minos and his man-eating bull, the Minotaur, which roamed the palace labyrinth. In the 1900s, British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans excavated and restored the ruins at Knossos. Beautiful and delicate frescoes of bulls and dolphins revealed a highly artistic civilisation and a people who apparently lived in harmony with nature.

Echoes of Atlantis
By Dr Iain Stewart Page 2 of 6 1. Introduction 2. Lost cities 3. Earthquake war 4. Helike ... Print entire article Lost cities Today, the myriad of theories - many of them breathtakingly fantastic ('Atlantis was an exploded planet'!) - ensures that the true nature of Plato's story is as elusive as ever. For those committed Atlanteans that believe Atlantis existed much as Plato described, the possible locations of the lost city are becoming increasingly exotic. Recent candidates lie as far afield as the Caribbean, South America, Antarctica, Ireland and French Polynesia. Many theories, however, contend that the Plato's Atlantis refers to the rise and fall of a known ancient civilisation, though one whose age or location differs from that expressed by Plato. Which ancient civilisation, of course, is a matter of vigorous debate. The Minoans of Crete have long been a popular choice, though there are plenty of other suggestions, one of which, Troy, has been given fresh support by Zangger. However, the fact that each of these competing theories requires some degree of adjustment (or re-interpretation of Plato's original account) has led many scholars to adopt the view held by many of his contemporaries - that Atlantis is a piece of fiction and is arguably best summed up in the words of the American classical scholar Daniel Dombrowski:

So people did not move there until a lot later. Our first evidence of real settlement in Greece comes from about 55,000 BC (57,000 years ago). Even then there were not very many people until around 3000 BC. Greek history is usually divided into a Stone Age, a Bronze Age, and an Iron Age. Each of these periods can be divided into smaller periods as well.

Introduction to the course:
The Ancient Greeks hold an important place in history of the formation of western culture. This class will attempt to provide a historical and cultural introduction to their world. We will begin with the environment and culture of the Greek peninsula b efore the arrival of the Greeks, and end with the conquest of the Greek city states by the Macedonians in 338 B.C. We will pay particular attention to the two centuries from 600-400 B.C. The lectures will proceed in chronological order, and will be suppl emented by readings both in the textbook and in primary source material. Classes will take the form of a lecture/discussion, often accompanied by other activities, such as debates or the viewing of slides videos. The purpose of this format is to allow the student to explore more deeply the concepts from the assigned readi ngs; for this reason, students are strongly encouraged to keep up with the reading assignments.

A history of
Ancient Greece
By the standards of the times Bronze Age (3000-1000B.C.) Ancient Greece was comparatively sophisticated but was also strongly influenced by the yet more accomplished Minoan civilization based on Crete that strongly flourished from 2000 -1450 B.C.
Minoan Crete maintained an extensive network of trading links that brought influences drawn from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Crete. The Minoans exported pottery, grains, wines, and oils, and tended to import luxury materials such as precious metals, jewels, and ivory. Minoan culture gave rise to several great cities that featured stone buildings and provision for a water supply and drainage. The city adjacent to the great Palace of Knossos was home, at its peak, to almost one hundred thousand people. Knossos was thus one of the first major cities in human history!!!   On the Greek mainland meanwhile Mycenaen authority was exercised through a number of localised kingdoms. These kingdoms may have adopted written record keeping based on Minoan examples.

Dr V G Callender
Assoc. Lecturer, Macquarie University
Principal focus
Through investigating the archaeological and written evidence of Minoan society, students learn about key developments and forces that shaped that society.
Outcomes
evaluates different ancient and modern sources, what they reveal about significant historical issues and how they contribute to our understanding of the past. selects and organises relevant historical and archaeological information from a variety of sources and evaluates the information and sources for their usefulness, validity and bias.
Background
When we try to investigate Minoan society we encounter a number of problems regarding evidence. Because the climate is frequently wet, most of the perishable evidence has disappeared with the weather. This makes it hard to construct a picture of Minoan society. We have some knowledge about Minoan people, of course, but this is very fragmentary: only small aspects of the Minoan social life are ever revealed at one time, mainly because the written materials are so few, and because scholars can read only a very little of this written evidence.
Written evidence
Linear A and Linear B
Although there was writing, the Minoan language has not been deciphered. Because of this, we try to understand some of Minoan society from Linear B tablets (which were written in early Greek) found at Knossos, Khania, and other places. One of the problems with the writing available both on Linear A (that is, the Minoan tablets) and Linear B (Greek tablets), is that most of the words are written on slabs of damp clay which were the tally cards for items that had been collected. These slabs or tablets were never meant to be kept; their contents are exactly the same as our own invoices. Thus, the contents of the tablets are only lists that deal with goods, rather than with the Minoan people and the way in which their society was structured. However, the tablets do give us clues that need to be taken into consideration.
