CERTIFICATION IN SECONDARY SCIENCE, GRADES 7-12
Presently there is a widening gap between the supply of science teachers and the openings for them. Recently the physical science departments received an urgent request from the State Education Department of the State of Minnesota for science teacher candidates. New chemistry teacher graduates from State College at Oneonta are snapped up rapidly. In one case there was a bidding war between two local school districts for one of our graduates. Even an elementary education major with a chemistry concentration got a job BEFORE HE COMPLETED HIS STUDENT TEACHING and is working as a full time teacher as of December 1998. My wife and I have both been approached by the City of New York to teach science because we are both certified. Neither of us were teaching in a public school system at the time (1995). All chemistry and physics graduates for the last 5 years have jobs in teaching. If you enjoy teaching, this is the time to make a move. The question is-how. What are the options?
1. The first possibility is to go through the traditional teacher preparation program. State College at Oneonta has such a program. Unfortunately, unless one decides early in the college career that teaching is his/her field of choice, the number of courses and the sequential nature of the curriculum can lead to a prolongation of the undergraduate stay with all the attendant disruptions and cost escalation.

Looking at Charter School Legislation:
State-By State Analysis MINNESOTA Minnesota meets most of the AFT criteria but lacks reporting requirements. Admissions policies:
Charter school admission can be limited by age or grade and students eligible to participate in the high school graduate incentives program. It can also be limited to specific geographic areas, where the percentage of the population of non-Caucasian people in the area is greater than the percentage of the non-Caucasian population in the congressional district in which the geographic area is located, as long as the school reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of the area. The school must enroll eligible pupils who submit a timely application, and if too many students apply they will be selected by lot. A school may not limit admissions on intellectual ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, or athletic ability, but targeting of at-risk population is encouraged. State standards apply: Yes. Charters must design programs to at least meet the outcomes adopted by the state board of education. In the absence of state board requirements, the school must meet the outcomes contained in the contract with the sponsor. Achievement levels of the outcomes contained in the contract may exceed the achievement level of any outcomes adopted by the state board.

Report on state certification requirements for teachers of Latin
from the Joint Committee on Classics in American Education, a committee of the
American Philological Association and the American Classical Association
updated 16 September 2003 This information is necessarily provisional because states frequently revise their requirements; in some cases precise details have been difficult to find. Corrections and updated information are welcome.
1. Almost every state offers Latin as a teaching subject
  • exception, Delaware the following states offer (ancient, apparently) Greek as a teaching subject:FL, GA, ID, MI (theoretical only for Greek), MN, NJ, VT the following states use different terminology
    NM, WY "Classical Languages"
2. The grade level for which teachers of these subjects are certified differs; in most cases the level at which a teacher may teach reflects pedagogical preparation rather than preparation in Latin or classics courses.

Certification Virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education.
STATE OF MICHIGAN
The State of Michigan charges a substantial fee (approximately $125.00) to issue a Provisional certificate. Information on this is provided during directed teaching.
The Teacher Education program at Calvin College matches or exceeds the requirements for a Michigan Provisional certificate. Because Calvin College is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education, graduates can more easily obtain certification in other states.
However, many states are presently changing their certification requirements. For example, the states marked with an asterisk (*) now require a course in teaching the exceptional child. If you are an elementary teacher and if one of these states is your home state, or if you are quite certain you may teach in one of these states, you should consider taking a course in the exceptional child.
A number of states, such as California, require a master's degree or its equivalent for regular teacher certification. All states require some sort of validation after a teacher completes a college program.

(NCATE: National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education) Introduction From March 30 to April 15, 2001, a Phase I survey was conducted of the teacher certification requirements in 24 states to ascertain their "cultural competence" requirements for teacher licensure. Holly Zanville, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Andrew Duncan, Director, the Southwestern Oregon University Center conducted the study. The study's key purposes were to:
  • Identify states (teacher licensing boards, state departments of education) that have a requirement of cultural competence for licensure of K-12 teachers (and other educators). Obtain a copy of definitions of cultural competence used in any of the states.
