If you wish to become a physician, an optometrist, a dentist, a podiatrist, a chiropractor or an osteopath, this fact sheet may answer some of your questions about allied health programs available at North Dakota State University.
    The Program
Pre-professional programs usually consist of four years of college. This is followed by four additional years in a professional school. While state-supported professional schools usually admit very few nonresidents, a resident of Minnesota attending NDSU and applying to the University of Minnesota Medical School will be given the same consideration as a Minnesota resident who has received a premedical education in Minnesota. Similarly, North Dakota residents are given equal priority by the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine regardless of graduation from NDSU, UND, or any other university of equal standing. Back to fact sheet index The Pre-Professional Curriculum There is no formal curriculum for you as a pre-professional student, so you are free to choose an academic major that is close to your personal interests. However, professional schools require their applicants to complete certain basic courses. As an example, the UND School of Medicine requires its applicants to have completed 16 semester hours in chemistry, eight in physics, eight in the biological sciences, three in college algebra, three in psychology or sociology and six in English. Students planning to apply to professional schools should seek information from particular schools and become familiar with any special requirements.

Why is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in Schools Important?
Poor indoor air quality can hasten building deterioration. One study of an elementary school showed that if $8,140 had been spent over 22 years on preventive maintenance, $1.5 million in repairs could have been avoided1. In addition, poor indoor air quality can contribute to the closing of schools, create liability problems, and strain relationships among parents, teachers, and the school administration.

Minnesota schools' spending largely driven by costs outside the classroom
James Walsh, Star Tribune March 24, 2002 Osseo spent months agonizing over cutting $8 million from its 2002-03 school budget. Minneapolis says it must slash $31.5 million; St. Paul, $20 million. All over Minnesota, school districts are cutting teaching jobs, increasing students' walking distance and raising athletics fees to deal with less-than-expected revenues and rising costs. Yet those districts are spending more money than ever nearly $6.3 billion in 2000-01 An increasingly skeptical public from Gov. Jesse Ventura on down wonders how the money is spent. A new Minnesota Poll found that while most Minnesotans don't think the Legislature gives enough money to K-12 education, they are split over whether schools spend that money wisely. In an effort to begin cracking the books of education finance in Minnesota, the Star Tribune analyzed five years of spending data from every school district.

Board of Electricity September 8, 1994 TO: SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS - ALL MINNESOTA SCHOOL DISTRICTS It has been brought to our attention that in many school districts throughout the state, school district employees install or maintain and repair electrical wiring on school premises. Please be aware that Minnesota Statutes section 326.242 require that such work must be done by, or under the supervision of, employees properly licensed by the Board of Electricity. In general, this would require that the school district employ a licensed master electrician. Every new electrical installation in any construction, remodeling, replacement, or repair is also required to be inspected for compliance with the minimum safety standards of the National Electrical Code by either the Board or the political subdivision which provides electrical inspection service pursuant to § MS 326.244. It has been our experience that much of the electrical work done by unlicensed persons is not in compliance with the safety standards and may be hazardous. We believe that you, as a school administrator, are concerned with the safety of the persons and property entrusted to you, and request your help in ensuring electrical safety by permitting only properly licensed employees to do electrical work, or securing the services of properly licensed electrical contractors for this purpose. We thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions concerning licensing or inspection requirements, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
