The Parent's Right To Know Act was introduced and passed in the 2000 Minnesota Legislature and includes recommendations for the use of integrated pest management in schools (see Developing an IPM Policy Statement for Your School The Working Group decided that a survey of pest management practices in Minnesota public and private K-12 schools was a good starting place to help identify current pest management practices because there was limited data on pest management practices in Minnesota K-12 schools. The MDA, with support of the Working Group, sought and was awarded funding in 1999 for the survey from the U.S. EPA, Region 5, Chicago, Illinois. The MDA took the initiative pursuant to its statutory authority contained in Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 17.114, Subd. 4, which states: "The state shall promote and facilitate the use of integrated pest management through education, technical or financial assistance, information and research."

Model Pesticide Notices
The Minnesota Legislature passed a new law called the Parents Right To Know Act of 2000 ( M.S. 121A.30 ). This law requires public and non-public K-12 schools, that plan to apply pesticides specified in the law, to provide notices to parents and employees. This law also requires the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) to develop and make available model notices for schools to use, if they choose to do so. Schools are required to provide notification only if they apply the pesticides specified in the law. These pesticides are (1) toxicity categories I, II, and III pesticides, which are classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and (2) restricted use pesticides, defined by federal law. (To determine the toxicity category of a specific pesticide product, refer to the Department of Education web site: http://cfl.state.mn.us/pesticide

05/19/2004 03:07 PM Long-term planning for Hill-Murray School in spotlight In late April, Joseph Peschges, President of Hill-Murray School and John Sprangers, Chair of Hill-Murray Board of Trustees, notified their school community that ongoing strategic planning, and specifically, activities involving major research studies were underway to address future needs of the school. “These are exciting times for Hill-Murray School. The school’s enrollment and financial standing are strong, and it is timely that we address long-term needs and plans for a strong future. As we proceed, we want to make sure you fully understand the reasons for this research. To make the reasons clear, we first need to give you some background information about the ownership structure of the school,” noted the letter. The second request, from the Archdiocese, would be to review the first scenario and consider the additional option of relocating to another site, possibly to the east or south to serve families which have traditionally attended the school and a growing portion of the metro area. “A benefit of relocation may include the ability to serve a broader range of families than is currently possible,” notes the letter from school leaders.
