    The University of Minnesota's Tucker Center is teaching girls how to get more media coverage.
    Does your local paper cover boys' sports more than girls' sports? Have you ever had an urge to change that? In Minnesota, the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport is helping girls do just that. Through a special program called, "Image Is Everything: Achieving Equitable Media Treatment for Females," the Tucker Center is empowering girls to obtain media coverage through their own initiative. "We just can't wait around for the media to change on their own," says Mary Jo Kane, Director of the Tucker Center and an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, where the Center is housed. Started in 1998, the program is specifically tailored for high school students and has been done at six Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area high schools. This year, the program will expand to 15 schools across Minnesota. The Tucker Center's long-term goal is to develop the program for use throughout the nation. The workshop begins by teaching girls what makes a negative image and what makes a positive image in the media. The participants then talk about how to combat the negative images. From there, the girls begin working on specific projects that can promote girls and women in sports.

    CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
    As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care."

    Advertising on Student Computers
    By Patricia A. Maloney In the 2000 legislative session, the legislature adopted a new law which impacts a school's ability to allow advertising on school computers. This law received little press, but school districts should be aware of the limitation, as it is our understanding districts have been, and continue to be, approached by companies offering attractive technology agreements in exchange for the right to advertise to students. Minnesota Laws 2000 Chapter 489 § 7 specifically adopted a new statute, Minn. Stat. § 123B.022, which provides: The school board of a school district may not enter into a contract or permit a school within the district to enter into a contract for the use of a computer or related equipment or service that requires advertising to be disseminated to students unless the school board:
  • Enters into the contract at a public hearing of the school board; Makes a finding that the offered electronic product or service is an integral component of students' education; Provide written notice to students' parents that advertising will be used in the classroom, media center, computer lab, or other areas of learning, whether data will be collected on students, and how that data will be used;

    "Minnesota Family Conference Day" Sheds Light on Rare Immune Disorders, Providing Education and Understanding
    Immune Deficiency Foundation Conference One of Many Initiatives for Primary Immune Deficiency Awareness Week, April 18-24 For Immediate Release (TOWSON, MARYLAND, April 21, 2004) - From the time she brought her newborn son, Isaac, home from the hospital, Kathy Antilla felt there was something wrong with his health. His little body suffered one infection after the next, including ear infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, pneumonia and pulmonary infections. Finally, at the age of 5, he was diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency, one of a number of disorders classified as a primary immune deficiency disease. Caused by a genetic defect in his immune system, the disease interferes with his body's ability to produce antibodies, making him susceptible to the numerous illnesses surrounding him at school, at home and in his everyday activities. A recent landmark study conducted by the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) found that people affected by primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDD) often go undetected and untreated, taking an average of 9.2 years from onset of symptoms until diagnosis. Because the symptoms of these life-threatening illnesses are not unique - the lack of awareness about PIDD, conflicting diagnoses, and inconsistent treatment regimens - repeated serious infections and pneumonias lead to long-term irreversible health consequences for individuals with primary immune deficiency diseases. These disorders include a group of more than 100 diseases in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly. The class of diseases affects approximately 50,000 Americans.
