Minnesota School Library Media Program Census
  • The census of all Minnesota school library media center programs followed MEMO's development of the Standards for Effective School Library Media Programs in May 2000. The Standards provide the best practices for Minnesota school library media programs and help library media specialists take a look at how their programs are doing. The census was funded with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funda The study assessed where school media programs stand in relation to the standards; assisted in explaining the many roles that school library media programs play in student success; and, provided a basis for advocay for the role of school library media programs.

Arts High School
The Arts High School is a comprehensive, residential, tuition-free public high school offering innovative coursework focused in six art areas: dance, literary arts, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts, combined with an intensive academic program. The school is open to 11th and 12th grade students who are Minnesota residents. Students accepted into the high school have artistic talent, either demonstrated or potential, and a desire to grow artistically and academically. All students who apply to the Arts High School participate in an admission review consisting of both arts and academic evaluations. Our courses are designed to meet all levels and types of learners. On average, 70% of our students continue on to higher education of some kind. The graduating class of 2002 has six commended National Merit Scholars and five semifinalists. This is a high percentage given a graduating class of 150 students. The majority of our classes are considered college preparatory and our students attend and report success at private and public colleges and universities throughout the country. Students qualifying for the post-secondary options program may also take selected courses at the University of Minnesota or other local institutions. In addition to our regular course work, we also develop a variety of internships for school credit. Our students intern at local radio stations, nonprofit arts organizations, and community cultural centers. Additional sites and opportunities are continually explored.

CONGRATULATIONS to the grade 8 and 10 students and their teachers on very positive BST results! We are aware that, historically, these two groups of students tested well, but their success is also due to the ongoing resolve of Ms. Prince and the fact that the middle school staff worked particularly hard on a "testing improvement " plan throughout most of this year that positively influenced the "record" results.
