It's truly a pleasure to be able to work with the wonderful students, parents, and staff of this school district. I became interested in students with unique needs (there wasn't an official term then) when I first started teaching in a small school in southern Minnesota in the late '60s/early '70s. It was apparent that the standard curriculum did not meet all of the educational needs of all of my students at the same time. In those days I never had less than 30+ students in my classroom. It was daunting, trying to look at each child as an individual, but needing to meet the daily needs of the whole group. It has taken more than 30 years for educational research and development to come to this point, but I'm pleased to report that now there are many ways to meet the needs of students in increasingly diverse classrooms. In school districts today, specialists work with classroom teachers to provide this service. What I do is actually a form of "special education", with all of its specialized training and knowledge. I have several years of classroom experience, a master's degree in gifted/creative/talented education, and an educational specialist's degree in administrative leadership.
