62. Conan The Librarian
Conan inhabits the mythical Information Age, where he is a typical reference librarian. His world nevertheless bears some strange similarities to our own. From the minnesota Association of Law libraries.
http://www.aallnet.org/chapter/mall/conan/conanhp.html
Conan the Librarian, by Hadley V. Baxendale The character of Conan the Librarian is a parody of Robert E. Howard's immortal character, Conan the Barbarian. He first appeared in 1987 in a skit performed by the library staff at the William Mitchell College of Law talent show. (The author's name should be familiar to all first-year law students.) He inhabits the mythical Information Age, where he is a typical reference librarian. His world nevertheless bears some strange similarities to our own. The original "Adventures of Conan the Librarian" is not currently available in electronic form. In the second tale, he journeys through lands and adventures recognizable to many law librarians. His third adventure takes him down the perilous Information Highway we all know and love. The Return of Conan the Librarian Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 ... Chapter 17 Conan the Librarian on the Information Highway Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 ... Chapter 25 The character of Conan the Librarian springs from the Jungian collective unconscious of information professionals. His legend is beyond the power of one bard to sing. Here are some other sightings of Conan on the Internet. The "real" Conan, selected links:

MINNESOTA LIBRARY ACCESS CENTER
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN
Construction for the Minnesota Library Access Center (MLAC), on the University of Minnesota West Bank Campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota, started in June 1997 and will be completed in July, 1999. The MLAC has two components - Archives Collection and Overflow. The Archives Collection will house precious, one-of-a-kind documents from collections around the country. Overflow storage will compliment the existing University Library system by providing space for infrequently accessed but important materials. This University of Minnesota Archive project consists of two storage caverns, and a six level conventional surface building. The caverns will house special books for libraries through the state as well as the University Archive collections and will be off-limits except for center employees. The mined caverns and tunnels have a footprint of 106,000 square feet and an excavated volume of 95,000 cubic yards. Each cavern is 600-feet long, 25-feet high, and 70-feet wide and is constructed in easily excavated St. Peter Sandstone and Glenwood shale with an overhead Platteville limestone roof. Two shafts will provide vertical circulation between the surface and mined space and emergency egress. The 50 foot high curved portal provides a 42 foot wide drive-in entrance for vehicles as large as semi-trailer trucks.

http://www1.law.ucla.edu/~volokh/harass/library.htm
"Squeamish Librarians" by Eugene Volokh, from reason.com, June 4, 2001 Workplace harassment law, the nation’s number-one form of speech code, has taken yet another step toward controlling what we may read and say. Libraries, the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has just ruled, may be breaking the law if they dare to give adult patrons complete and unfiltered Internet access. One can argue about whether libraries have a constitutional duty to provide totally unfiltered access, even to adults. Some people say that a library should have the power to control what happens on its property, and to stop patrons from accessing sexually themed materials on library computers. Others say that even when government computers and buildings are involved, libraries may not censor Internet access. But until now, most people had assumed that a library had a right to provide such access, if that’s how it understood its professional obligation. Not so, says the EEOC: Because some material accessed by patrons may be offensive to the librarians who end up seeing it, the law can punish libraries for allowing such unlimited access. The case arose in Minneapolis, which used to provide unfiltered access to adults in its libraries. Many libraries do this, and this is, in fact, the approach suggested by the American Library Association.

Rallying for the State Library Agency in Minnesota
by Bill Asp Many in the Minnesota library community were shocked to learn on June 4 that six of nine staff working in library development, including Office of Library Development and Services (LDS) Director Joyce Swonger, had received lay-off notices effective June 28. Minnesota has had a state library agency since 1899, and while it was smaller than state library agencies in many other states it had consistently provided essential services to strengthen library services in Minnesota. The June cuts followed cuts in March, when the state library agency lost 4.5 FTE positions. At that time, library supporters argued that the March layoffs, resulting from Governor Ventura's cuts in state agency budgets, were disproportionate to cuts in other parts of the Department of Children, Families and Learning (CFL), the parent agency. With the devastating cuts in June, the Minnesota library community immediately began to rally in support of the state library agency. Again, it appeared that cuts to the state library agency were disproportionate. With the lay-off of the agency director, how could we still have a state library agency? Since the three remaining staff had been told that they would report to the Education Finance Manager, how could it be said that Minnesota had a state library agency? How could the three remaining staff carry out all of the statutory requirements in Minnesota law, including provision of consultant assistance and administration of grant programs? Would Minnesota remain eligible for Federal LSTA funds?
