Weather, geography and Minnesota nice drag down restaurant scene
Rick Nelson, Star Tribune May 15, 2003 The Twin Cities would get **** as national leaders in theater, music and the visual arts. But when it comes to restaurants, we're more like **. If that. Some factors are beyond our power to change. Consider these familiar Minnesota-isms. The nation's icebox. Try finding fresh local produce when there's snow on the ground five months out of the year. And forget about luring crowds into your hip bistro when the windchill is minus-40. Geography's curse. Fresh seafood ain't easy when the nearest ocean is 1,000 miles away. Pass the hot dish. Our lingering Scandinavian-German-Irish heritage holds a decidedly anti-ostentation attitude toward food. Potatoes and boiled fish, anyone? Also, the hedonism locked into the DNA of every great food town is absent from our largely Lutheran genetic code. (We wouldn't want to enjoy anything too much.)

John Hottinger notes that he'll serve in the shadow of outgoing leader Roger Moe, who held the position for 22 years longer then anyone else in state history. (MPR Photo/Michael Khoo) DFL lawmakers have two new leaders. Senate Democrats picked John Hottinger of St. Peter to replace outgoing Majority Leader Roger Moe. Moe stepped down from the Senate to pursue an unsuccessful bid for governor this year. And House DFLers have selected St. Paul Rep. Matt Entenza to serve as Minority Leader. Both caucuses saw a significant loss of seats in Tuesday's elections, but Democrats say they'll regroup to confront the new political geography.

Subject Index: Home What is Geography? Degree Requirements Faculty ... Maps! What is Geography? Geography is not memorizing state capitals. As history is to time, geography is to place. It is the character of a place, its culture, environment, and ecology. Geography is an interdisciplinary field of study that offers you a rich body of knowledge about the character of diverse places. It focuses on the cultural, environmental, political, economic, and demographic processes shaping the world we live in. The discipline of Geography ranges from a broad and comprehensive understanding of the world to the specifics of computer generated maps and geo-demographic analysis. Geographers make extensive use of computer skills to analyze a wide range of issues, including urban restructuring, habitat preservation, retail location, landscape evolution, economic development, demographic change, and evolution of the global economy. With training in both the natural and social sciences, geographers have a wide range of careers in government, the private sector, and education. Geographers create digital maps, work with census data, help locate retail and service stores, work in local, state, and federal parks, analyze land use, work as urban planners and business consultants, teach, and hold a wide variety of other jobs.

Minnesota: I grew up on a grain farm in a rural part of Minnesota nearly 180 miles west of Minneapolis. The closest town to the farm is the large metropolis of Dumont. If I remember correctly, I think there are still over 100 residents in the town. Needless to say, it is a desolate but gorgeous place to be! Specifically, the farm is located in Traverse county, which forms part of the border with northeast South Dakota. The area is laden with rich farm land, wetlands, lakes, and an assortment of upland, lowland, and aquatic life. Whitetail deer, pheasants, mallards, and walleyes are some of my favorites! Summertime fishing, fall hunting, and ice fishing during the winter are all something that I enjoy. Family Farming Pictures: Here is a picture of my dad, Don Stueve, out harvesting soybeans during the fall of 1998 with a 9600 John Deere combine. I was back farming with the family at the time and if I remember correctly, these beans were yielding around 45+ bushels per acre. Click the picture to get a larger view! Here is another action picture of one of the farm trucks fully loaded with soybeans. It is during the same year and in the same field that the combine in the previous picture is harvesting. Click the picture to get a larger view!

    Appendix: The Field Experience
It may be only natural for an inveterate traveler and tourist to become interested in the study of tourism, though it took me eight years of frequent traveling in various parts of the world to formalize my interest by entering graduate school. There I found, somewhat to my surprise, that scholars in a range of disciplines were discussing the very issues which I had been contemplating as a dilettante for years. While my fascination with the topics discussed in this paper developed over a long period of time, my interest in the specifics of ecotourism development in the Amazon arose during a 1993 trip to Ecuador. There I visited a number of ecotourism projects as a tourist and casual student of ecotourism. Late in that trip I also learned about Capirona's project, though I did not have time to visit it. The following year I began graduate school at the University of Minnesota with the notion of studying Capirona as a "model" of ecotourism development. I was fortunate in that my advisor and many other faculty in the Geography Department supported my desire to do fieldwork in rural Ecuador as a M.A. student, which to stricter minds might appear preposterous. The field research took place over two months in the fall of 1995, almost all of which I spent in Napo Province. After several days in Quito, where I spoke with several ecotourism developers, operators, and observers, I traveled to Tena to meet with Tarquino Tapuy, RINCANCIE's ecotourism coordinator. We met frequently over a period of a week to develop an agreement which would be of mutual interest and benefit. He told me that Capirona was no longer accepting any type of non-tourist visitor; its members had had their fill of journalists, scholars, students, and anyone else who required unusual attention. As an alternative, he suggested R’o Blanco. Though just one year old, its ecotourism project was second only to Capirona in tourist visitation.
