Minneapolis, Minnesota
"Minneapolis" redirects here. There is also Minneapolis, Kansas Minneapolis is the county seat of Hennepin County, Minnesota . As of the census, the city had a total population of 382,618 making it the largest city in Minnesota . It is in the southeast part of the state, adjoining the second-largest city and state capital, Saint Paul . The two cities on the Mississippi River together are known as the Twin Cities . Minneapolis takes its name from the Dakota word for water ('minne') and the Greek word for city ('polis'), and is sometimes called the "City of Lakes". Minneapolis grew up around the Falls of Saint Anthony , which are the highest falls on the Mississippi River and were the end of the commercially navigable section of the river until locks were installed in the . Father Louis Hennepin was the first European to explore the area, giving the falls their name, as well as lending his name to the county in which Minneapolis is located. The nearby Fort Snelling spurred the growth of the villages of Minneapolis and Saint Anthony around the falls in the . Minneapolis became a city in 1867, and merged with Saint Anthony in 1872.

The city is located just south of 45 degrees north latitude (the suburb of Roseville has a marker near an obscure intersection identifying the exact location of the 45th parallel). Areas of interest include the Science Museum of Minnesota , the State Capitol building, and the city's Civic Center. Refer to the City's website for additional information. It is also home to the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra , the St. Paul Saints minor league baseball team, and the Minnesota Wild National Hockey League team. Nearby attractions include the Mississippi River , the Mall of America , and the Minnesota State Fair . Census searching without an index (or fear!)
Sooner or later, every family researcher will be faced with having to search a census, page by page. For the most part Minnesota state censuses are not indexed, while some of federal censuses for Minnesota have indexes. Still, indexes are not perfect, because handwriting is difficult to read, names are misspelled, or indexers just skipped the entry. Searching page by page is not the daunting task it might seem, as most censuses follow a very systematic structure geography. Because geography is critical to finding any family record, it's actually easier than it might first appear to find someone on a population schedule, even when no index exits. There are just a few simple thoughts to keep in mind. You might already know where the family lived. But if you don't, use all possible clues from your prior research. Other census records might include the birthplaces of the children - in some instances, one can trace the westward migration of a family simply by noting where children are born. You may have obituaries, family stories, letters or postcards suggesting locations to check out, or you may have traced their land or probate records, or looked them up in a city directory or plat book. And of course vital records can provide locations. Be as specific as possible for the point in time when the census was taken, whether it's a street address in a city, or a neighborhood, or the formal land description.

Minneapolis, U.S. Political Geography
Related Category: U.S. Political Geography Minneapolis E u lis] Pronunciation Key , city (1990 pop. 368,383), seat of Hennepin co., E Minn., at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River, at St. Anthony Falls; inc. 1856. The largest city in the state and a port of entry, it is a major industrial and rail hub. With adjacent St. Paul (the two are known as the Twin Cities), it is the processing, distribution, and trade center for a vast grain and cattle area. Minneapolis is also a banking and financial center with a significant high-technology industry. Chief among the many manufactures are food products, electronic equipment, instruments, graphic art products, machinery, fabricated metals, chemicals, and textiles. Although the central city's population has declined since the 1970s, the suburbs have grown. An influx of African Americans and immigrants began to change the city's racial composition in the 1990s. The falls were visited by Louis Hennepin in 1683; Fort Snelling was established in 1819; and a sawmill was built at the falls in 1821. The village of St. Anthony was settled c.1839 on the east side of the river near the falls. Minneapolis originated on the river's west side c.1847 and included much of the reservation of Fort Snelling. It annexed St. Anthony in 1872. The city became the country's foremost lumber center, and after the plains were planted with wheat and the railroads were built, flour milling developed, with the 50-ft (15-m) falls supplying power.
