For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas.
Census Regions and Divisions
Counties (and equivalents)
Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

Bordered by Canada in the north and Iowa in the south, while dissected vertically by the Mississippi River, Minnesota is a central northern state with distinct seasons and varied topography. Due to its northern location, Minnesota’s climate is cooler than most other continental states. Minnesota, however, does enjoy four distinct seasons including warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Central Minnesota temperatures in July average from 60 to 85 degrees F (16-29 C), while January temperatures typically range from 5 to 20 degrees F (-157 C). Average annual precipitation ranges from 18 inches (46 cm) in the northwest to over 30 inches (76 cm) in the southeast. Approximately 65% of this precipitation falls in the form of rain between May and September. Average annual snowfall ranges from 70 inches (178 cm) along Lake Superior to 36 inches (91 cm) in the southwest. With almost 87,000 sq. miles (225,330 sq. km), Minnesota is the 12th largest state in the U.S. Minnesota is comprised primarily of rolling plains, which provide excellent fertile topsoil. The northern area of the state is rockier, while the southern area is flat, encompassing rivers and streams. Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, Minnesota is actually home to over 15,000 lakes and five major rivers, with 7,326 sq. miles (18,974 sq. km) covered by water. Minnesota sits at a mean of 1,200 feet (366 m) above sea level; the elevation ranges from 602 feet (183 m) above sea level at Lake Superior to 2,301 feet (701 m) above sea level at the summit of Eagle Mountain.

MN Minnesota's name comes from the Dakota (Sioux) word for the Minnesota River's "sky-tinted waters." In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state. Minnesota is an important producer of agricultural and manufactured goods. The state's history is the story of the development of its natural resources. The fur-bearing animals of the forests first attracted fur traders. Next, the fertile soil brought farmers, who poured into the region from the Eastern States and from Europe. The thick forests of tall pines attracted lumberjacks from Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin. Minnesota's scenic beauty, sparkling lakes and deep pine woods make it a vacation wonderland. Campers, canoeists and hikers can explore its vast northern wilderness areas. Canadian Shield , from which iron ore is decreasingly extracted. The Vermilion and Cuyuna ranges (discovered in 1884 and 1911) are virtually depleted, and the once rich Mesabi range (1890) has also declined. South of the iron country, famous for its old-time boomtowns, lie rolling hills. In the south and the west are prairies, fertile farming country. The state has more than 11,000 lakes and numerous streams and rivers. The rivers feed three great river systems: The Red River of the north and its tributaries in the west run north through Manitoba's lakes to Hudson Bay; streams in the east run into Lake Superior, and eventually into the St. Lawrence; and the Mississippi flows south from Minnesota headwaters above Lake Itasca, gathering volume from the waters of the St. Croix and Minnesota rivers before leaving the state. The beauty of Minnesota's lakes and dense green forests, as seen in Voyageurs National Park, has long attracted vacationers, and there is excellent fishing in the state's many rivers, lakes, and streams. Also of interest to tourists are the Grand Portage and Pipestone national monuments (see National Parks and Monuments , table), Itasca State Park (at the headwaters of the Mississippi), and the world's largest open-pit iron mine at Hibbing Saint Paul , the capital, and its larger twin, Minneapolis , are the two largest cities.

Metadata Summary
Originator Minnesota Land Management Information Center (LMIC) Abstract This medium-scale (generally 1:100,000) data set represents municipal boundaries in Minnesota, including changes filed with and approved by the Minnesota Department of Administration's Municipal Boundary Adjustments group through May 31, 2003. The over 3,000 municipalities (minor civil divisions or MCDs) in Minnesota include cities, townships and unorganized territories. Municipal Boundary Adjustments staff work with property owners, local governments, and state agencies to review and facilitate 375 to 400 municipal boundary adjustments annually. The majority of petitions for adjustment are from property owners and the remainder are from cities and townships.
The U.S. Bureau of the Census 2000 Municipal Boundary File (TIGER) for Minnesota served as the foundation for this work. The data was first adjusted by the Minnesota Legislative Coordinating Commission (LCC) GIS Office (see Lineage Section of this metadata record for more information on the original file) and subsequently by LMIC in 2002, at the request of the Office of the Secretary of State. Most recently, boundary changes filed with and approved by the Minnesota Boundary Adjustments group since February 2002 were incorporated in this file.
