Minnesota Road Trip
A Minnesota Geography Lesson Plan
(Updated 2-9-04)
Summary : This intermediate to middle-grade lesson plan is designed to explore four of the five themes of geography (location, place, movement, and regions) as they relate to Minnesota through planning a seven-day trip around the state. Though this activity can be done individually, it works best if students complete it in groups of three or four. Suggested time for the project is about five hours (five one-hour class periods). Objectives : 1) Students will plan a week-long trip around the state of Minnesota which includes all four regions of the state.
2) Students will write a detailed itinerary for their trip which consists of descriptions of each day's agenda including both places visited and routes traveled to get from place to place.
3) Students will fill in a blank map of Minnesota with the places and routes listed in their itinerary. Materials : Good Minnesota road maps, line drawings of Minnesota (have students draw basic Minnesota maps, or go to Minnesota Map Outline or Printable Minnesota State Map to print a basic map), and Internet access.

The Louisiana Purchase: A Connection from Coast to Coast
When we think of the French and early Minnesota, we often think of the northern part, with its connections to Quebec and the fur trade. But there's more to it than that. On April 30, 2003, we will celebrate the Bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase, which included vast acreage west of the Mississippi River from Lake Itasca in Minnesota (and points north) all the way to New Orleans. That initiated a flurry of exploration, as it then appeared possible to see the United States extend from the Atlantic Coast all the way to the Pacific. Schoolcraft, Keating, Lewis and Clark, Featherstonehaugh, and others wrote of their visits to the area. Settlers followed, new territories were formed, and the forts to protect settlers were built. Fort Snelling was begun in 1819, at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. Settlers living in what was to be Minnesota were enumerated by census takers in 1840, divided along the lines of the Louisiana Purchase. Those living east of the line were enumerated with the Wisconsin Territory and those living west of the line with the Iowa Territory. Both these censuses have been indexed and are available in various libraries. (You might even find someone on the 1830 Michigan Territorial Census, before it was subdivided.)

Resources for Minnesota Geography
Most family historians have a basic library of resources to supplement their research, such as a dictionary and a contemporary road atlas. That atlas can provide answers to questions such as "What county holds the land records?" or "What is the name of the river where Grandma fished?" The resources listed below can also help. Some are no longer in print, though they might be available at libraries or used/rare bookstores. All are invaluable to those researching Minnesota roots. Out of print, but sometimes available in libraries:
  • Minnesota Geographic Names , by Warren Upham. Compendium of place names, collected from early settlers. Organized by county, it includes some short biographies about people connected with naming of Minnesota places, dates for when communities and counties were organized, information about railroad towns, lakes and streams, etc. There are sections on street names for Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth. This book is considered the "Bible" for place names. Originally published as part of the Minnesota Historical Society's Collections, Vol. 17

Bordered by Canada in the north and Iowa in the south, while dissected vertically by the Mississippi River, Minnesota is a central northern state with distinct seasons and varied topography. Due to its northern location, Minnesota’s climate is cooler than most other continental states. Minnesota, however, does enjoy four distinct seasons including warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Central Minnesota temperatures in July average from 60 to 85 degrees F (16-29 C), while January temperatures typically range from 5 to 20 degrees F (-157 C). Average annual precipitation ranges from 18 inches (46 cm) in the northwest to over 30 inches (76 cm) in the southeast. Approximately 65% of this precipitation falls in the form of rain between May and September. Average annual snowfall ranges from 70 inches (178 cm) along Lake Superior to 36 inches (91 cm) in the southwest. With almost 87,000 sq. miles (225,330 sq. km), Minnesota is the 12th largest state in the U.S. Minnesota is comprised primarily of rolling plains, which provide excellent fertile topsoil. The northern area of the state is rockier, while the southern area is flat, encompassing rivers and streams. Known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”, Minnesota is actually home to over 15,000 lakes and five major rivers, with 7,326 sq. miles (18,974 sq. km) covered by water. Minnesota sits at a mean of 1,200 feet (366 m) above sea level; the elevation ranges from 602 feet (183 m) above sea level at Lake Superior to 2,301 feet (701 m) above sea level at the summit of Eagle Mountain.
