Genealogy Resources Available at the University of Minnesota Libraries
While there is no collection or staff specifically dedicated to genealogy in the University Libraries, the over 5 million volumes, a nationally-acclaimed map library, several thousand newspapers, and well over a million government documents constitute a rich resource for genealogists. However, genealogists often come to Wilson Library with unrealistic expectations of what they will find and go away disappointed and frustrated. Much of your basic research should be completed before you come to the library. You will need to bring with you the correct spelling and spelling variations of individuals' names and place names (foreign characters, e.g

They came from Scandinavia to Lake Lillian, Minnesota
Lake Lillian was founded in May, 1864 on the shores of Lake Lillian in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, by Rev. Johannes Andreas Johannessen Bomstad, who led his family and religious colony of Troms Mindekirken dissenters (Apostolic Free Church members) from the northernmost edges of Scandinavia to America. During the next three decades, emigrants from other parts of Norway and Scandinavia arrived in the area of Lake Lillian to make their homes in a new land, and to pass on their Scandinavian heritage to their descendants. Many of these new settlers were from the parishes of Gagnef and Mockfjard, in Dalarna, Sweden. A handful were even of Sami descendancy. Now, almost one hundred and fifty years later, the descendants of these proud and adventurous people are looking backward toward their ancestry, in search of their family roots in Lake Lillian. This is their gathering place ...
This site is dedicated to the great granddaughters of Rev. Johannes Bomstad, Elphie Serone Nielson-Kettner and Eleanor Magdalena Nielson-Larson, and to my great-aunt (and cousin) Mrs. Gertrude (Olson) Nielson. Without their wealth of knowledge and history, this site would not be possible.

Swedish Institute include some materials that may be useful to those doing genealogy research, primarily if the Swedish immigrant settled in minnesota.
http://www.americanswedishinst.org/genealgy.htm
  • The holdings of the archives and library of the American Swedish Institute include some materials that may be useful to those doing genealogy research, primarily if the Swedish immigrant settled in Minnesota. Because most of the records are limited to the late 19th and early 20th centuries the ASI holdings generally are not helpful in finding living descendants of Swedish immigrants.
The staff of the ASI archives and library is small and therefore unable to provide extensive research. Researchers are welcome to search records themselves, in which case it is important to schedule an appointment in advance. Call or fax to request an appointment.
Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 12-4 p.m. and Wednesday 12-8 p.m. Additionally, the archives and library are open the third Saturday of each month from 12-4 p.m. Researchers who are not members of the American Swedish Institute pay a fee.
For researchers just beginning their family genealogy, it is suggested that the pamphlet "Tracing Your Swedish Ancestry" be purchased.
American Swedish Institute holdings potentially useful to genealogy researchers include:
    • Port departure records on microfiche: Göteborg 1869-1896 and Malmö 1874-1895
Emigrant lists for Swedish counties on microfiche: Norrbotten 1851-1947, Stockholm (excluding the city) 1851-1947, Södermanland 1851-1947, Uppsala 1851-1947, Östergötland 1851-1947

Branches and Interest Groups
Several ethnic and special interest branches have been formed to focus on unique genealogical interests or problems in a specialized research area. These branches operate under the MGS umbrella, but are individual organizations with their own officers, meetings, and dues structures. They hold their own meetings and conduct projects of interest to their members. Some publish their own newsletters. Membership in any branch or subgroup is separate from MGS membership. You may apply for membership in as many branches as you wish. Branch meetings are publicized in the MGS newsletters.
From the beginning, MGS members have seen that a thorough understanding of the history, laws, customs and records in each ethnic area is essential for effective genealogical research. MGS and the branches work together to offer a wide range of educational and research opportunities for members and the general public.
