Middle School Helps Parents With Resource Center
Part of a national partnership program to encourage parent and community involvement in schools, a parent resource center in a Connecticut middle school helps parents understand their middle-school-age youngsters. Included: Tips for starting a parent center in your school! Parents of middle school children often ponder why a once-loving child seems to change, almost overnight, as puberty approaches. A formerly sweet child now sulks. Respect turns to belligerence and intelligent behavior gives way to irresponsible conduct. For many parents of middle school children, the terrible twos would be a welcome change from the turbulent teens. Timothy Neville, principal of

  • The Family Book by G. Allan Roehr Institute. 52 pp. A booklet for families who have just learned that their child has a mental disability. Chapters include "Finding Out," "Reaching Out," "The Family," "Community Living," "Working With Professionals," "The Future," and "Resources and Recommended Reading.” This is a well-written booklet; it speaks to both the spoken and the often unspoken concerns.
After the Tears: Parents Talk About Raising A Child with A Disability by Robin Simons. 89 pp. Preface states, "In parenting a child with a disability, you face a major choice. You can believe that your child's condition is a deathblow to everything you've dreamed and worked toward until now. Or you can decide that you will continue to lead the life you'd planned - and incorporate your child into it. Parents who choose the latter course find they do a tremendous amount of growing." Well-written book with sections on guilt and anger, adjustments, isolation, marital stress, relatives, siblings, other family needs, strangers, professionals, the school system, meeting one's own needs, chronic sorrow, communication, and personal growth. Highly recommended for both parents and professionals.
