MN AGO Home Charities Office Classroom ... Utilities Scholarship and Financial Aid Scams PDF A s college costs continue to rise, students increasingly find themselves searching for scholarships and financial aid. Through high pressure sales seminars and other methods, some unscrupulous companies purport to guarantee or promise scholarships, grants and other financial aid for a fee, but deliver little or none of the promised assistance. The Minnesota Attorney General's Office has filed lawsuits against several such companies. Sudents and their families should watch out for the following tactics and claims: "You are eligible for millions of dollars in unclaimed student aid." Although many students are eligible for aid through the federal and state governments, companies may try to inflate or misrepresent the amount that is actually available. "You will not be able to get this information anywhere else." Although some companies may indicate that you are not able to find this information elsewhere, many sources for financial aid exist, including your high school guidance office, college financial aid office, and state and federal government agencies. Further, according to the Minnesota Higher Education Services Office, 95 percent of financial aid is awarded through the government or an educational institution. "You must provide your credit card or checking account number."

Arrowhead University Consortium Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum The Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum is the result of a collaborative effort by all of the two-and four-year public colleges and universities in Minnesota to define a common philosophy toward general education. The goal of this effort is to help students transfer their work in general education. Completion of a defined transfer curriculum at one institution enables a student to receive credit for all lower-division general education upon admission to any other institution. Students who complete a general education transfer curriculum are certified in ten areas of competency by faculty at the sending institution. The Minnesota General Education Transfer Curriculum provides details about the competencies. The following are the ten areas of emphasis: Goal 1 Written and Oral Communication To develop writers and speakers who use the English language effectively and who read, write, speak and listen critically. As a base, all students should complete introductory communication requirements early in their collegiate studies. Writing competency is an ongoing process to be reinforced through writing-intensive courses and writing across the curriculum.

Asbestos
Asbestos is a mineral fiber that can cause scarring of lung tissue (asbestosis) and inflammation of the lung cavity. Asbestos exposure also increases the incidence of lung cancer and other cancers. Due to its strength, heat resistance and chemical properties, asbestos was used in a wide variety of products and materials. Scientific and medical concerns about exposure to asbestos and government regulation of the use of asbestos, have caused industries to produce and use much fewer asbestos-containing materials since the late 1970s. In general, the more asbestos a person is exposed to, the greater the risk of developing an asbestos related disease. Exposure to asbestos occurs through inhalation of airborne microscopic fibers. Airborne asbestos can be present during renovation and demolition of buildings and building products. Residential and nonresidential buildings can contain asbestos materials. Untrained individuals performing asbestos-related work can expose themselves, other individuals in the building, or their own families by having their clothing or skin contaminated with asbestos fibers. Asbestos work is regulated by the state to ensure the public is protected. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) specifies work practices to identify and manage asbestos and to safely remove, encapsulate, or enclose asbestos-containing materials. MDH licenses asbestos contractors and certifies asbestos workers, site supervisors, building inspectors, management planners, and project designers to ensure trained people perform asbestos work or management. MDH also issues permits for all asbestos-related work projects.
