Officials with the Department of Children, Families and Learning recently announced more layoffs and service reductions, as they cope with an $8.5 million budget cut. State lawmakers passed a $2 billion budget balancing bill this year that cut the budget for the Department of Children, Families and Learning by 17 percent. Commissioner Christine Jax says she was forced to eliminate 60 agency positions to make up for the lost funding. She says her agency is now one of the smallest state education departments in the nation.

After the speech, Kerry's campaign released a press statement declaring the candidate "will establish new systems that reward teachers for excellence in the classroom, including pay based on improvement in student achievement." In a May 7 speech to the Democratic Leadership Council, Kerry said, "Yesterday, I proposed the most far-reaching reforms in teacher pay in our nation's history." Last week in Washington, D.C., National Education Association (NEA) President Reg Weaver, Executive Director John Wilson, and Director of Government Relations Diane Shust met with Kerry. On the issue of performance pay, Weaver reported in a memo to union officials, "We raised our concerns that the Kerry campaign used the language 'pay-for-performance' in his press release, although the Senator himself did not use those words in his remarks and the formal policy document did not use it. The Senator clarified that the campaign did not intend to use that language and would not do so in the future. He asked that I convey this point to NEA leaders."

The Minnesota Digital Library (MDL) Coalition a group of content providers from libraries, archives, historical societies, and museums in Minnesota endeavors to create a Minnesota Digital Library, providing a server and database environment and imaging support that will serve as a foundation for future activity. The MDL Coalition will work with local, regional, and statewide collections to identify and digitize unique resources and special collections to support education, scholarship, and entertainment through Internet-access by the citizens of Minnesota as well as for a global audience. “Minnesota Reflections,” funded by a Minnesota LSTA grant, will be the initial statewide digitization effort sponsored by the MDL Coalition.
