The reports are also available from the authors. Findings from the past YAR reports suggest that there are a number of questions that are important for understanding project sustainability. These include:
  • Is the project meeting its original goals? Is the project maintaining or expanding rather than reducing efforts to meet its goals? Does the project have secure future funding?
There are a number of factors that facilitate program sustainability and are incorporated into this report. These factors include: Program flexibility, Adequate and qualified staff, Collaboration within communities and involvement by the communities, Adequate and long-term funding, and the Ability to demonstrate impact. The central questions addressed in this report are:
  • What is the current status of the 94 Youth at Risk projects four years after funding ended?

NWS Input to NOAA's Weekly Report - August 29, 2002 HOT ISSUES I. KEY DEPARTMENT NEWS The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Weather Service and Arkansas Department of Emergency Management to Sign Memorandum of Agreement. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) National Weather Service and Florida State and Federal Agencies Collaborate to Get Additional Data. The NWS, working in collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT), NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS) and Forecast System Laboratory (FSL), and Florida Weather Forecast Offices, is working to enhance weather analyses and forecasting through the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) sites throughout Florida. The Florida DOT plans to install 50 GPS sites around the state to improve its geophysical observation and mapping capability. Once installed, the GPS system will help provide atmospheric moisture content measurements that may be accessed at any time (currently upper air weather balloons capture those data only twice a day). This is an important asset in increasing efficiency and effectiveness of NWS forecasting capabilities. Since GPS signals are affected by atmospheric water vapor, the FSL has developed a technique to derive Integrated Precipitable Water estimates (moisture content from the Earth's surface to the top of the atmosphere) from the GPS data. A few GPS sites are currently operational in Florida and are already providing the NWS with high resolution real time IPW estimates. All 50 GPS sites are expected to be operational within the next two years. (Contact: Ron Trumbla, W/SR, 817-978-1111, ext. 140)

Grapes: Cultivars, Training and Pruning
Planting and caring for grapes both are covered here. Donald H. Steinegger, Extension Horticulturist Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Grapes have long been a favorite fruit of the home gardener. The earliest settlers in the New World found wild grapes thriving along streams and in timbered areas. These were mostly of the species Vites labrusca and V. riparia , while the wine and dessert grapes of the Old World are V. vinifera Although it is not without its challenges, adapted cultivars of grapes can be grown in Nebraska. Many of these are a result of both American and French breeders' efforts to combine the hardiness characteristics of the native American grapes ( V. labrusca V. riparia V. rupestris ) with the high quality inherent to the European ( V. vinifera ) types. In addition to the American hybrids, some French hybrid cultivars, such as "Leon Millot," are adapted to southeastern Nebraska. Cultivars of Vitis and Muscadine ( V. rotundifolia

Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that begins sometime during the first three years of a child’s life. Autism is a neurologically based disorder. It affects the way children communicate, interact with other people and how they perceive and react to the world that surrounds them. Patterns of behavior that are characteristic of autism include impairment of reciprocal social interactions and impaired communication skills and restricted range of interests or repetitive behaviors. Not all children with autism behave the same way. This is what is meant by a “spectrum of autism”. Each child might display different combinations of behaviors, ranging from mild to severe. Other disorders related to autism are Rett’s Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger’s Disorder. Researchers have not found a specific cause for autism.

Can I sell my home preserved food?

April 2003
Can I sell food made in my home kitchen?
The short answer is, "probably not." Each state is different, so proper advice is needed from a specialist in each state. Some states allow sales at farmer's markets of select foods; others prohibit sales altogether. The National Center for Home Food Preservation does NOT provide guidelines to home food preservers who wish to take the next step from home food preservation to commercial food preservation. Home food preservation is not regulated; however, food preservation and processing for commercial purposes is regulated. There are federal level regulations from the U.S. FDA (also USDA for meat and poultry products), state level regulations, and often county or city regulations. Read further to find someone who can help.
