London is the capital of the United Kingdom and of England, and with over seven million inhabitants in the Greater London area, is the second-most populous conurbation in Europe (after Moscow). From being Londinium , the capital of Roman Britannia, it rose to become the centre of the British Empire and to contribute today 17% of the GDP of the world's fourth largest economy. London has been one of the world's most important centres of commerce and politics for almost two millennia (although the capital of England was Winchester during most of the Dark Ages).

Courtesy of Pipestone County Museum and National Register Collection In 1892, the first Pipestone Indian School building was finished. Children began arriving from all over the Midwest from such tribes as the Dakota, Oneida, Pottawatomie, Arickarree, Sac and Fox. As was typical of federal Indian vocational schools, students usually spent half their day in the classroom and the other half learning occupations such as farming, blacksmithing, masonry, carpentry, cooking, baking, and nursing. The training of students in these industrial skills was resented by many Indians who saw this essentially as menial chores. As government programs changed, funding decreased, and the role of the Indian school diminished until 1953 when the school was closed. When Southwestern Vocational Technical Institute opened in 1976, nearly all of the original Indian School buildings were removed or destroyed. However, the Superintendent's Residence survived and was used as a private residence until 1983. Since that time the building has been the property of Minnesota West Community College (although the name has been changed several times) and used for storage.

Biographical Sketch by Robert DesJarlait
"M y earliest memories of Red Lake have a storybook quality," wrote Ojibway artist Patrick DesJarlait. "I remember beautiful pure white snow. There were acres of forest lands on the reservation and the clear blue lakes held almost every kind of Minnesota fish. Nature provided a perfect setting for a young Indian growing up. I spent many hours of my childhood wandering through the woods, either by myself or with my friends. And in the forests that surrounded my home, I found the animals and woodland scenes that became the subjects of my first drawings." A s a little boy growing up on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, he was called Na-gwa-bo Boy in the Woods. He was given this name because he could always be found in the woods, always alone, and either quietly sketching or thinking. Patrick DesJarlait found beauty in his surroundings. He found beauty in the faces of his people. He found beauty in their way of life. He found beauty where he was not supposed to find it. In boarding school, where his Indian name was taken away, his teachers told him repeatedly there was no value in an Indian way of life. He did not listen. He continued to sketch the woodlands, the animal-beings and the people he came to know so well. T he DesJarlait family consisted of his parents and four brothers and two sisters. Patrick's father worked as a woodcutter for the Red Lake Lumber Mill. His mother died when he was seven. After this very sad event in his life, he spent much of his time in boarding schools at Red lake and Pipestone, Minnesota. He did not begin to think seriously of taking up a career in art until he entered higfh school. At Red Lake High School, he became a student of Miss Ross, an English teacher. She encouraged his interest in art. She even purchased special supplies for him on her trips to the cities.

Photos, teaching resource listing, reservations map. $3.50. No ISBN This special issue of the twice-yearly magazine provides a good overview of Ojibwe life and culture at about the time Minnesota Indians were being forced onto reservations. An initial essay is drawn by Gilman from the thoughtful and colorful autobiography of Way-quah-gishig (John Rogers of the White Earth reservation. Another essay describes the effects of th Dawes Allotment Act, with a map that shows the checkerboarding of Leech Lake (once a part of what had been intended to be the larger White Earth), where 90% of the land has been lost either to private purchasers or to state and U.S. Forest Service land. It's one of the better presentations on this shameful and important aspect of American history for young people. For on-reservation life, the total control of the Indian (Bureau of Indian Affairs) agent a power so easily and so often abused is shown. There is a short essay about how the agents arrested the Beaulieu brothrs and seized the printing presses and issues of the first Indian newspaper, the White Earth

The following bibliography lists reference material dealing with Indian boarding schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These resources include material found in the Labriola National American Indian Data Center in the University Libraries at Arizona State University, websites, and other research facilities. This subject guide is also located on the Labriola Center website at www.asu.edu/lib/archives/labriola.htm
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

About Educators toolkit Multicultural programs Members ... Links An Overview of Private Education Private or independent schools have a long and respected history in Minnesota going back before the founding of our state. In Minnesota, private/independent K-12 schools educate 10% of the state's children and save the taxpayers considerable money every year through the reduced number of children in the public school system. The language of private schools can be a little confusing at times, but the Minnesota Independent School Forum, or MISF, is dedicated to working with K-12 schools, families and students to enhance education in Minnesota. Here is a brief overview of private school terms and options: Private School. A school that is not governed and operated by the state education system. A private school can either be nonprofit, as most are, or for profit. Generally the term is used to all types of schools not operated by the state, such as parochial schools, boarding schools, etc. Private schools can be religious or not religious (nonsectarian). Independent School.

The Reservation Boarding School System
in the United States, 1870 -1928 Justification and Rationalization Day Schools vs. Boarding Schools Carlisle Indian School and Richard Henry Pratt The System Begins to Fail By way of introduction: The Reservation Boarding School System was a war in disguise. It was a war between the United States government and the children of the First People of this land. Its intention was that of any war, elimination of the enemy. The reason this war is difficult to recognize is because it was covered by the attractive patina of a concept called "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was a philosophy by which the white european invader imagined themselves as having a divine right to take possession of all land and its fruits. The reason that the Concept of Manifest Destiny was so effective was because, as it steam rolled across the land, it dragged the masses with it. The hooks that dragged these masses were many and were forged by Christianity and the Christian imprimatur. Although the fuel that energized Manifest Destiny was economic, the inspiration was in its alignment with divine will. This quote from the essay

    Children need homes, not orphanages!
ALEXANDRIA, VA. No matter how many times they stand corrected, those who want to institutionalize 4-year-olds in Mary Jo Copeland's proposed orphanage in Eagan keep repeating the same misinformation in the apparent hope that endless repetition will drown out the facts. The children of Minnesota deserve better.
No matter how many times orphanage proponents say there is a "need" for the institution, there isn't.
Backers argue that the orphanage is needed because children in foster care bounce from foster home to foster home. But the data they use to support this claim are national data. In Minnesota in the year 2000, more than 87 percent of children in foster care had been in only one foster home.
Orphanage proponents may claim it should be used for the other 13 percent, sometimes called "permanency youth." But the vast majority of these are older children with behavior problems. Orphanage backers have said repeatedly that the welcome mat is not out for these children. If Copeland really is targeting "permanency youth" who bounce from home to home, she will have to fill her institution with 200 angry teenagers. If she won't take such teenagers, then she cannot serve "permanency youth." She will have to persuade counties to send her children who easily could be placed in good, stable foster homes instead.
