Did you know? A century ago, the European Mink could be found throughout the European continent. Populations have declined due to hunting, habitat loss, water pollution and competition with the American mink, which was introduced into Europe in 1926 for fur farming. Already extinct in most of its former range, the European Mink is declining rapidly in Eastern Europe. Your Purchase Matters Every time you buy a Wildlife Works product, you help us build a brighter future for endangered wildlife and their habitats. Description:
Mink ( Mustela vison ) have a long, thin body and neck, short legs, and a 6-8 inch bushy tail. Male mink generally are larger than females and may exceed two feet in length. The fur is dark brown on the back, blending into a slightly lighter shade on the belly. A distinguishing mink characteristic is the small white patch of fur on the chin of all animals. Mink fur is very soft and lustrous. The dense underfur is protected by oily guard hairs that tend to waterproof the coat. Like other members of the weasel family, such as weasels and skunks, mink possess a pair of anal scent glands. The liquid in these glands has a strong smell and probably is used for communication or defense purposes.
Distribution and Habitat:
Mink are distributed throughout all of New York State and most of the United States and Canada. They occupy a wide variety of wetland habitat types including streams, rivers, lakes, freshwater and saltwater marshes and coastlines. Their population levels are generally higher in those areas of New York with an abundance of these habitat types. Also, as part of this study, wildlife biologists and technicians surveyed streams in central and western New York to determine the presence of mink. Mink tracks were more abundant in the Southern Tier of New York than in the Lake Plains. The reason for this is uncertain and needs further study.

Mammals
There are over 20 species of mammal in Elan, most are nocturnal and wary of man and are therefore rarely seen. Grey Squirrels are common and easy to see, they come originally from America and are larger and more adaptable than the native Red Squirrel. There are no records of reds since the 1960s. There are only occasional records of Deer on the Estate. Badgers, Otters, Polecats, Mink, Stoats and Weasels are all members of the weasel (mustelid) family. Badgers are strong burrowers and live in setts as family groups. As well as the main sett which is always in use, they may have other smaller setts in their territory which they only use occasionally. Otters occur close to the Estate and they do use our rivers, reservoirs and lakes as fishing grounds for brown trout. Polecats are uncommon outside of Wales and its bordering counties although the population is spreading. They are the wild cousins of domestic ferrets with which they will interbreed.

FRANCIS BEIDLER FOREST
IN FOUR HOLES SWAMP
A National Audubon Society Sanctuary
From The Heart of The Swamp
By Michael Dawson,
Assistant Sanctuary Manager
May, 1998 With Mother's Day fast approaching, I feel it only fitting to sing the praises of Moms everywhere, including four legged ones that inhabit swamps! A mother's instinct to protect her young is a fascinating and powerful drive. My tender swampy story of motherly love and self-sacrificing devotion involves a baby mink and its mom, as well as five canoes loaded with ten humans. I was leading a canoe trip into the heart of the swamp some years ago, when we heard a series of bizarre, high pitched, squeaky, difficult to describe, desperate sounding cries. Upon closer investigation, I discovered a baby mink clinging to a small cypress knee about a foot out of the water, crying his head off. All five canoes gathered to about 6 feet to get a closer look. He was 8 inches long, chocolate brown with big whiskers, and very distressed. Now, I usually try to avoid the practice of anthropomorphizing. That's a $10.00 word describing our propensity for attributing human characteristics to animals. For example: " Oh! That poor fawn looks so sad!" For some reason, we reserve this practice only for cute and/or fuzzy animals. I have yet to hear anyone proclaim "Oh my, but that little cockroach looks so lonely!"

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wildlife
Thanks to Canadian Border Outfitters for sharing this information on Boundary Waters. Over 52 species of mammals and 150 species of birds inhabit the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota and the Quetico Provincial Park of Ontario, Canada. Sitting at your campsite you may see a tiny shrew weighing a fraction of an ounce, or a huge bull moose weighing in at over 1200 pounds. The black bear travels the canoe trails as well. Bears range in weight from 50-300 pounds, some reaching 600 on occasion! Colors range from glossy black to cinnamon brown. Keep those food packs in the air and a clean camp! The raccoon is a rare sight, more common in the central section of Minnesota. The cat family includes the solitary and nocturnal lynx and bobcat. These cats are rarely seen, because the area sits at the southern limit of the lynx range and the northern extreme of the bobcat's range. Traveling and portaging as silently as possible will afford you with the best possibility of seeing wildlife up close. If you hear a rustling or crashing in the woods, sit quietly and be patient. Moose, deer and other mammals frequently lack good eyesight, but have a great sense of smell. Usually they will smell your presence and if you remain still they will move into the open, or right by you after realizing that your smell is not a"threat" to them.

Prevalence of Giant Kidney Worm ( Dioctophyma
renale
) in Wild Mink ( Mustela vison ) in Minnesota
L. David Mech and Shawn P. Tracy
Abstract: Of 138 wild mink ( Mustela vison ) from eastern Minnesota, 27% contained Dioctophyma renale , primarily in the right kidney. No significant difference between prevalence in adult male and immature male mink was found, nor between the prevalence in males versus female mink. Thirteen worms were found in one male mink, representing the highest documented infection intensity of a single wild mink. This resource is based on the following source (Northern Prairie Publication 1121): Mech, L. David, and Shawn P. Tracy. 2001. Prevalence of giant kidney worm ( Dioctophyma renale ) in wild mink ( Mustela vison ) in Minnesota. American Midland Naturalist 145(1):206-209. This resource should be cited as: Mech, L. Furbearer Species
Beaver:
Beaver continue to grow in size throughout life, and weights in excess of 60 or 70 pounds do occur when foods are abundant and accessible during the entire year. Unlike many other species, females are as large as males of the same age, and they sometimes are larger. A paddle shaped, leathery tail, positively identifies the species. An adult's tail is usually about 10 inches long, and 5 or 6 inches wide, with a thickness of 1/2 inch in the middle.
Coyote:
Coyotes are wild canines, with dog or wolf-like features. Weights are slightly heavier for males, with average weights in the western states of about 30 pounds for males versus 25 pounds for females. A coyote immigration has impacted eastern states since the early 1950's and the eastern coyote is now recognized as a true breeding subspecies of coyote. The eastern coyotes do attain larger body weights than western coyotes, and this may reflect hereditary traits as a result of cross breeding between northern coyotes and eastern timber wolves. Weights of over 60 pounds have been recorded for some eastern coyote males, although the majority weigh between 30-35 pounds.
Bobcat:
Male bobcats are slightly larger and heavier than females. Most adult males weigh 20 to 22 pounds, while females average 18 to 19 pounds. Individuals may be much larger at times, especially in the northern states where many mature males may weigh 30 pounds. The heaviest recorded bobcat was taken in Maine and weighed 76 pounds. Bobcats have short tails of 5 to 6 inches in length. The underside of the tail is whitish, and there is a black spot near the end of the tail. Lynx can be confused with bobcats in northern areas, but the lynx tail is totally black, top and bottom, over the entire end of the tail.
